Airfares are high. Planes are packed, and hotels are pricey.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"caas-body\">\n<p>About 6 in 10 Americans are taking at least one summer trip, according to the&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.ustravel.org\/research\/monthly-travel-data-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:latest data\" data-rapid_p=\"9\" data-v9y=\"1\">latest data<\/a>&nbsp;from the U.S. Travel Association. Of those planning vacations, 35% expect to travel more this summer than last.<\/p>\n<p>But your 2022 summer vacation could cost between 25% and 50% more than last summer&#8217;s vacation, Christopher&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/chriselliotts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Elliott\" data-rapid_p=\"10\" data-v9y=\"1\">Elliott<\/a>, a consumer advocate and editor of the travel newsletter&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.elliottconfidential.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Elliott Confidential\" data-rapid_p=\"11\" data-v9y=\"1\">Elliott Confidential<\/a>, told Yahoo Money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the summer for a staycation,\u201d Elliott said. \u201cAirlines are trying to make up for two bad years by raising fares to record levels. Passengers be damned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For those still set on globetrotting, travelers who can be flexible with schedules, take time to research, and wait for the best airfares and room rates can still find deals. To unpack ways to save money in the face of inflationary headwinds, Yahoo Money reached out to top travel experts for their advice.<\/p>\n<h2><strong style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Where you travel<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Some of this summer\u2019s cheapest domestic destinations to fly round-trip are Fort Lauderdale, Fla., (average price is $289), Minneapolis (average price is $297), New York (average price $316) and Nashville (average price is $324), according to KAYAK data.<\/p>\n<p>And it may serve you well to look beyond the U.S. this summer for your getaway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you&#8217;re having trouble finding good deals this summer domestically, we\u2019re seeing some better deals in Europe,\u201d Summer Hull, a travel expert with the&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Points Guy\" data-rapid_p=\"12\" data-v9y=\"1\">The Points Guy<\/a>, a website devoted to maximizing credit card, airline and hotel loyalty points, told Yahoo Money. \u201cBut you have to be willing to deal with some of the reentry testing requirements and be flexible on where you go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With&nbsp;<a class=\"link  yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/euro-brink-breaking-last-support-152553648.html?AID=11868487&amp;PID=7950790&amp;guccounter=1\" data-ylk=\"slk:the exchange rate;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-rapid_p=\"13\" data-v9y=\"1\">the exchange rate<\/a>&nbsp;between a weakening euro and the more robust dollar at the lowest in five years, a European jaunt can be reasonably affordable. Amsterdam, Barcelona, Prague, for instance, are popular destinations right now, Christie Hudson,&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Expedia Group\" data-rapid_p=\"14\" data-v9y=\"1\">Expedia Group<\/a>\u2019s travel expert, told Yahoo Money.<\/p>\n<p>Other top international destinations for U.S. travelers with cheap fares and benefitting from a strong dollar include Calgary, Mexico City, Panama City and Vancouver, according to KAYAK\u2019s reporting.<\/p>\n<p>As for lodging, expect the best hotel deals in cities such as Boston, Chicago, and New York, according to Hudson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCities were slower to recover over the course of the pandemic because people sought out beach destinations, nature, outdoor stuff,\u201d Hudson said.. \u201cThey aren&#8217;t the beach, but they can be very cool places to go during the summer as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One place to search for the best room rates is Hotels.com\u2019s new&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/new-hotelscom-pricing-index-reveals-when-and-where-to-score-best-hotel-rates-this-summer-301528372.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hot Price Index\" data-rapid_p=\"16\" data-v9y=\"1\">Hot Price Index<\/a>, which tracks average nightly hotel rates in hundreds of destinations worldwide to find the best deals.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>When you travel<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Timing matters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot all summer months are priced the same,\u201d Hudson said.<\/p>\n<p>August, for example, is by far the cheapest month to fly, according to Expedia&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.expedia.com\/2022-04-06-Expedia-releases-a-summer-travel-cheat-sheet,-revealing-cheapest-times-to-fly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:data\" data-rapid_p=\"17\" data-v9y=\"1\">data<\/a>. The average ticket prices for August go down 10% compared to July. And they&#8217;re 5% cheaper than June, especially the last two weeks of August, when some of the country has gone back to school and summer travels winding down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first two weeks of September are looking awfully good,\u201d Elliott said.<\/p>\n<p>The day of the week you travel is key, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/money.yahoo.com\/pricey-summer-travel-162326520.html\">Read on Yahoo Money<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor domestic flights, Sunday is the most expensive day of the week to fly,\u201d Jake Bouvrie, vice president of data science and chief economist at KAYAK, told Yahoo Money. \u201cFlights are 15% more expensive on average that day than other days of the week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about 15% cheaper to travel on a Tuesday versus a Friday in terms of airfare tickets, according to Expedia\u2019s research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor international flights, Thursday is the cheapest day of the week to fly when flights are 4% cheaper on average that day compared to other days of the week,\u201d Bouvrie said. \u201cFlying in the morning may help you save money on these trips out of the country. Flights between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. are 22% cheaper than other times throughout the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The priciest time to travel this summer? The 4th of July, which falls on a Monday, creating a convenient long weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s going be about 25% more expensive than average to take that trip,\u201d Hudson said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>When you book<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The crystal ball question of whether prices will keep rising is tough to know. But based on Expedia data, \u201cflight bookings two weeks to a month in advance of your travel date are kind of the sweet spot right now to get the best price,\u201d Hudson said. \u201cPeople who are planning more than 60 days in advance are actually paying higher fares on average.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Free price tracking tools that alert you when prices drop or are about to go up such as travel search engine KAYAK\u2019s&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.kayak.com\/news\/how-kayak-price-alerts-get-you-the-best-deals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:price alerts\" data-rapid_p=\"18\" data-v9y=\"1\">price alerts<\/a>,&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/travel\/answer\/6235879?hl=en&amp;co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Google Flights\" data-rapid_p=\"19\" data-v9y=\"1\">Google Flights<\/a>,&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.hopper.com\/deal-drops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hopper\" data-rapid_p=\"20\" data-v9y=\"1\">Hopper<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.skyscanner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:Skyscanner\" data-rapid_p=\"21\" data-v9y=\"1\">Skyscanner<\/a>&nbsp;can be your best friend. Expedia also has a new tracker on its app that tells you the exact day to expect the price to be best for your trip.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, \u201ctravelers might combine two&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.kayak.com\/news\/hacker-fare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:one-way\" data-rapid_p=\"22\" data-v9y=\"1\">one-way&nbsp;<\/a>tickets on different airlines that we call a \u2018hacker fare,\u2019 which can save them money over a traditional round-trip,\u201d Bouvrie said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Other cost-saving tips<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To dig out a car rental deal, turn to&nbsp;<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoslash.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:AutoSlash\" data-rapid_p=\"23\" data-v9y=\"1\">AutoSlash<\/a>, Hull said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you put in a request, the search engine scans a large database of car rental coupon and discount codes, then sends you the cheapest rate,\u201d Hull said. \u2018And it\u2019s free to use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re set on the beach for the summer sandcastle building, the all-inclusive packages that combine the cost of drinks and food with the price of your room may be the best way to budget and protect yourself from rising costs, Hudson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can budget for it in advance. And you don&#8217;t have to worry about it once you get there,\u201d Hudson said.<\/p>\n<p>Bundling your flight, hotel, and\/or rental car all in one booking can also cut down costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can save you hundreds of dollars,\u201d Hudson said. \u201cI&#8217;ve done it for many, many trips for my family.
