Photo courtesy of Hillwood Museum &amp; Gardens<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"css-13o4bnb e1maroi60\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<section class=\"meteredContent css-1r7ky0e\">\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">On a recent morning, the blooming gardens of the\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/hillwoodmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hillwood Estate, Museum &amp; Gardens<\/a>, tucked away in the northwest corner of Washington, D.C., were alive with flashes of movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">There were children careening down the slope of a manicured lawn and couples posing for selfies while hugging life-size, three-dimensional dancing wire sculptures that seemed to float above the ferns and foliage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read on Th<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/20\/arts\/hillwood-estate-art-kristine-mays.html\">e New York Times<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The vibrant 13-acre formal garden is far removed from its past as a hidden, exclusive enclave that was the home of\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1973\/09\/13\/archives\/mrs-marjorie-merriweather-post-is-dead-at-86-a-rich-working-woman.html\">Marjorie Merriweather Post<\/a>, daughter of the breakfast-cereal tycoon C.W. Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Hillwood, a private\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hillwoodmuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">museum<\/a>, opened to the public in 1977 after Ms. Post\u2019s death, and displays her predominantly 18th- and 19th-century French and Russian art collection, featuring the work of Faberg\u00e9, S\u00e8vres porcelain, Gobelins tapestries and Aubusson carpets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">But in June, it was the garden exhibition, \u201c<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/hillwoodmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/kristine-mays-rich-soil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rich Soil<\/a>,\u201d by the San Francisco artist\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/kristinemays.com\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kristine Mays<\/a>\u00a0that welcomed post-pandemic visitors to stroll its pathways and play amid the seven groupings of her 29 sculptures, each of which is made from thousands of separate pieces of rebar tie steel wire looped and hooked together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">It is all part of a bold\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VCM39hyIoP0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">program<\/a> to transform a staid and restrained museum that has long been hidden from the consciousness of many of the city\u2019s residents and visitors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was the most highly attended summer in our history, with more than 25,000 visitors from June 12 to Aug. 31,\u201d said Rebecca Tilles, Hillwood\u2019s associate curator of 18th-century French and Western European fine and decorative arts and the curator of the exhibition. \u201cThat\u2019s 21 percent ahead of the same time in 2017 \u2014 the previous record for summer attendance,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-2-wrapper\" class=\"css-1r07izm\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-2-slug\" class=\"css-l9onyx\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div enslaved people who once toiled on the property, and this idea of them coming back, like their spirits rising up from the soil and rejoicing now that they\u2019re free,\u201d Ms. Mays, who is Black, said. \u201cI felt like I was creating for my own ancestors.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Moreover, there is a \u201cbeautiful thing that happens when you connect nature with art,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople interact with both and embrace the sacred nature of creation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-3-wrapper\" class=\"css-qlhgae\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-3-slug\" class=\"css-l9onyx\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"after-story-ad-3\"><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Ms. Mays finds that photographs often serve as her muse. \u201cI love to collect photographs of people in all forms of movement \u2014 if they\u2019re dancing, or if they\u2019re running, or if the wind is blowing against them,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">For this exhibition, the inspiration was a series of photos capturing the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater company performing \u201c<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/pressroom.alvinailey.org\/alvin-ailey-american-dance-theater\/repertory\/revelations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Revelations<\/a>.\u201d \u201cThese images reflect sorrow, jubilance and hope,\u201d Ms. Mays said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">She explains the heart of her craft this way: \u201cIf you\u2019re watching someone you love and they unconsciously do something \u2014 say, you notice the way they brush their jacket, or a certain way that they turn, and you catch them at an angle, and you try to remember that moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cYou can see it in the work in the sense that there are pieces where the dresses are blowing in the wind,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019s about trying to grasp a moment in time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The outdoor exhibition \u201cis rare for Hillwood,\u201d Ms. Tilles said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cBut it is in line with its mission to educate and inspire and in sync with Post\u2019s love of dance as a patron of the Washington Ballet and American Ballet Theater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">And it\u2019s dance that these groupings evoke. \u201cDancing is the most freeing thing,\u201d Ms. Mays said. \u201cYou just get swept up in it. You\u2019re not really thinking. You\u2019re not self-conscious. You rise. There is a feeling of resilience and determination pushing the dancers to move and climb above the blossoms.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">For those who look carefully, there\u2019s an additional, semi-obscured significance. The first piece in the show, for instance, has a text by the poet Maya Angelou woven into the bodice and the skirt: It reads: \u201cThere is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.\u201d This sculpture was recently acquired by the museum and will be permanently on display after the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">As Ms. Mays said: \u201cIt\u2019s about reconnecting to a deeper purpose \u2014 the soul and spirit of our lives. I create the outer shell, the exterior of a human being, but provoke you to see what\u2019s within.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Children look at it very differently than adults do, she said. \u201cSome look at it purely for what it is \u2014 \u2018oh, that\u2019s a pretty dress.\u2019 Whereas someone else might look at it and they\u2019ll see the spirit and essence that\u2019s within the dress.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-s99gbd StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">In that vein, Ms. Mays uses her art to touch upon current political and social events. Specifically, the wire-sculpture grouping called \u201cLittle Worlds Within Us\u201d consists of a rumpled hoodie and a short dress across from it, paying tribute to\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/codeswitch\/2018\/07\/31\/631897758\/a-look-back-at-trayvon-martins-death-and-the-movement-it-inspired\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trayvon Martin<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/breonna-taylor-police.html\">Breonna Taylor<\/a>, young African Americans whose deaths inspired nationwide protests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">There\u2019s a \u201cpeacefulness in being in these beautifully established gardens,\u201d Ms. Mays said. \u201cThe artwork adds another element to it and opens another sensory awareness.
