She discovered\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.getsetup.io\/classes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GetSetUp<\/a>, an interactive website that delivers virtual education to older adults.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Even former chief executives like Jeff Mihm, a Miami resident who led Noven Pharmaceuticals, sometimes need a new life direction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">After resigning from his corporate post, Mr. Mihm, 55, decided to go back to school \u2014 virtually, because of the pandemic \u2014 and enrolled in the University of Texas\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/towerfellows.utexas.edu\/#rec198018652\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tower Fellows program<\/a>\u00a0in September. \u201cI have a love of learning, and it was an opportunity to step back, study and explore,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/09\/education\/online-learning-older-adults.html\">Read on The New York Times<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The internet has empowered adult learners by providing new online tools to ramp up education and training. \u201cThe need for workers to keep pace with fast-moving economic, cultural and technological changes, combined with longer careers, will add up to great swaths of adults who need to learn more than generations past \u2014 and faster than ever,\u201d said Luke Yoquinto, a research associate at the M.I.T. AgeLab and co-author of \u201c<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/546526\/grasp-by-sanjay-sarma-with-luke-yoquinto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grasp: The Science Transforming How We Learn<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">By 2034, the number of adults age 65 and older will outnumber those under the age of 18, according to the\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2018\/cb18-41-population-projections.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Census Bureau<\/a>. \u201cThat growth of older age demographics will translate to new demand for enrichment in the form of digital education,\u201d Mr. Yoquinto said. \u201cI would say that, for both good and ill, older demographics are going to serve as a proving ground for learning technologies in the coming years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Adult education, however, is \u201cthe Wild West\u201d of education technology, according to Mr. Yoquinto. There are many outlets experimenting with ways to get a handle on the online adult education marketplace, including community colleges and universities, for-profit learning platforms, workshop providers and nonprofit organizations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The new platforms are also opening doors to more adults. \u201cThere are already tons of people who, once upon a time, by dint of age or circumstance, wouldn\u2019t traditionally have gotten the chance to partake in education, but can now sign up for free online courses,\u201d Mr. Yoquinto said. Participants can choose a class here and there, without strapping on a backpack and heading to campus or signing up for expensive degree programs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\">\n<div id=\"c-col-editors-picks\" class=\"css-j64t31\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Virtual learning has become \u201cthe great equalizer,\u201d said Gene O\u2019Neill, the chief executive of the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/navc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North American Veterinary Community<\/a><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">, which provides continuing education for veterinarians around the world. \u201cBecause of virtual learning, veterinary professionals everywhere, even in remote, undeveloped countries, can learn from the world\u2019s most renowned leaders and virtually participate in conferences,\u201d he said. \u201cThis puts learning on an equal platform for everyone regardless of geography, income or time constraints.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Ms. Livingston\u2019s goal was to improve her skills so she could become a paid teacher on the GetSetUp platform, which offers classes \u2014 all taught via Zoom by teachers older than 50 \u2014 on skills from professional development to technology, health, wellness and hobbies like photography. By the time you get that certificate, the skill is already outdated. We\u2019re changing that model.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Ms. Livingston, who lives in York, Pa., signed up to learn how to use Zoom to host classes, how to manage and lead an online class and how to teach Google Classrooms. \u201cSeniors everywhere were in lockdown and were eager to learn and connect,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Because she\u2019s interested in cooking and eating healthy meals, Ms. Livingston eventually began teaching classes such as \u201cGreat Dinners in 30 Minutes or Less,\u201d \u201cHealthy Eating on a Budget\u201d and \u201cHealthy Desserts That Are Delicious, Too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">In January, Oasis, a nonprofit educational organization, launched\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oasiseverywhere.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oasis Everywhere,<\/a>\u00a0with a menu of online classes on subjects from art to writing.\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/seniorplanet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senior Planet<\/a>, a unit of\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/oats.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Older Adults Technology Services<\/a>, or OATS, is a nonprofit resource for people 60 and older that offers courses and lectures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">OATS was founded in 2004 in New York City as a community-based project for older adults focused on tech education. Since then, it has expanded to over 200 locations in five states, serving urban and rural communities. It provides tablets, along with training and technical support, to 10,000 older residents of New York City Housing Authority communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cI really wanted to create a program that would be able to get older adults to use technology and give them the kinds of training and support in environments where they could succeed,\u201d Mr. Kamber said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">While older adults are continuing to learn new skills, they also are\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/21\/business\/retirement\/older-entrepreneurs.html\">starting new businesses<\/a>. In 2019,\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kauffman.org\/currents\/entrepreneurs-of-a-certain-age-uncertain-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research from the Kauffman Foundation<\/a>, a nonpartisan group supporting entrepreneurship, found that more than 25 percent of new entrepreneurs were ages 55 to 64, up from about 15 percent in 1996.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Online courses are riding that start-up wave. GetSetUp, for example, offers courses on running an e-commerce marketplace, starting a business from home and building a website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Other offerings for entrepreneurs include\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blissen.io\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blissen<\/a>, a three-month virtual boot camp for entrepreneurs over 50, and the AARP Foundation\u2019s<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u00a0<\/strong><a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/workforyourself.aarpfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Work for Yourself @50+<\/a>, which offers free webinars and workshops.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">But all these online opportunities are not possible without access to the internet. \u201cWhile there\u2019s a rising passion for knowledge, people are getting excluded from the educational process in this country because they\u2019re not online,\u201d Mr. Kamber said. Based on a\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/press.humana.com\/news\/news-details\/2021\/Report-22-Million-U.S.-Seniors-Lack-Broadband-Internet-Access-First-Time-Study-Quantifies-Digital-Isolation-of-Older-Americans-as-Pandemic-Continues-to-Ravage-Nation\/default.aspx#gsc.tab=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research report<\/a>\u00a0OATS recently released in partnership with the Humana Foundation, nearly 22 million Americans over the age of 65 lack broadband access at home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cThe good news, though, is the level of sophistication of online education is increasing and more access is coming to rural communities,\u201d Mr. Kamber said. \u201cIt\u2019s a brave new world of learning for people, and that gives me hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">For Ms. Livingston, that means continuing to take and teach classes at GetSetUp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cLearning at any stage of life is what stimulates creativity and joy,\u201d she said. \u201cSo much energy emerges from connecting the dots, having \u2018aha\u2019 moments and gaining skills.
