Photo courtesy of Ms. Molina Ni\u00f1o<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cThe truth is, no one knows what\u2019s next because no one has seen anything like the current intersection of crises,\u201d said Nathalie Molina Ni\u00f1o, author of \u201cLeapfrog: The New Revolution for Women Entrepreneurs\u201d and chief executive of<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u00a0<\/strong><a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/outcomesoveroptics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">O\u00b3<\/a>, a privately held start-up investment firm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cEntrepreneurs are delusionally optimistic, by design,\u201d she said. \u201cWhich is why even amidst what some days looks like a mass burial ground for small businesses across the country, with storefronts shuttered from coast to coast, entrepreneurs are still starting and, in some cases, growing their businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">That\u2019s what Eric Levitan plans to do. In April, after 25 years of working in technology and running software companies, Mr. Levitan, 49, started the Atlanta-based\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teamvivo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vivo,<\/a>\u00a0a virtual small-group strength-training fitness program for adults 55 and older and conducted live with a certified instructor. Customers participate in 45-minute classes twice a week. In August, Alexi and Brendan Coffey, started\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stewardhome.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steward<\/a>, a virtual business based in New York City, to help people become successful plant growers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cWe had been working for the past two years or so, developing the technology for the app, building a team, testing, and the launch was scheduled for early spring,\u201d said Mr. Coffey, 31. Before the pandemic, the couple had raised $500,000 from early-stage angel investors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cWe were blindsided, postponed the launch and rethought our plan,\u201d said Ms. Coffey, 29. While other restaurants were closing, Suhail Karimi, 35, in Los Gatos, Calif., knew it was his time to chase his dream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cThere was a bit of a fire sale,\u201d he said. As a result, he purchased the liquor license and other components of a restaurant business from a tenant who had been operating in the location at roughly half the original pre-pandemic asking price. He was also able to negotiate a less costly lease with the landlord. And so, three months ago, he opened his first restaurant,\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/elevencollegeave.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eleven College Ave<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cIt has been a little bit of a struggle, but we\u2019re surviving,\u201d he said. \u201cI knew what I was getting into, and that there were going to be several challenges ahead to adhere to the ever-changing safety guidelines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">The biggest challenge: \u201cWe\u2019re at such a small capacity \u2014 40 diners at a time,\u201d he said. \u201cThe dining room has a full capacity of 140.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-5-wrapper\" class=\"css-1r07izm\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-5-slug\" class=\"css-l9onyx\">\n<p>His start-up costs \u2014 around $500,000 \u2014 were family-funded. \u201cIt was definitely a very calculated risk,\u201d he said. \u201cIt took a lot of discussion and moving pieces to make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Christina Hale did not deliberate. She began making hair bows eight years ago for her daughter, who was 7 at the time. Before long, she was selling her creations at crafts festivals and had broadened her repertoire to include jewelry, wooden signs, wreaths and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">But Ms. Hale, 47, had not considered opening her own retail store until the coronavirus canceled the family summer vacation to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and her college-age son moved back home full time when his dorm was closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">\u201cThat\u2019s when I saw the \u2018for rent\u2019 sign,\u201d Ms. Hale said. \u201cIt was the sign for me. I now have three kids at home, and there was no room for all of my inventory \u2014 some 4,200 bows alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">She swapped that $4,000 vacation fund for the storefront, which came with a rock-bottom rent. And in October, Ms. Hale welcomed her first customers to\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bows4u.gifts2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bows 4 U &amp; Gifts 2<\/a>, an 800-square-foot retail store in Culpeper, Va.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\">Developing a clientele has been slow, but it is growing. (Ms. Hale hopes to open an online outlet for her business as well.) \u201cSome people will stop and look in the window, but don\u2019t want to enter,\u201d she said. \u201cI leave my door open for the fresh air, and when they do step in, they get giddy.
