I wanted to help and serve, but didn\u2019t know how to in my own family.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">When she was 24, though, she faced it. Her thesis question: If we could step into the world of someone who is aging, could that help health care providers be more effective?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">The evolving technology of virtual reality helped her answer that question. And four years ago, Ms. Shaw started Embodied Labs, alongside her sister, Erin Washington, who also cared for their mother, and is the chief product officer, and Thomas Leahy, a college classmate, now the firm\u2019s chief technology officer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-2-wrapper\" class=\"css-2ninbb\">\n<div id=\"after-story-ad-2\"><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">The company\u2019s software allows users to peer into the body and mind of someone confronted with aging issues: cognitive decline such as Alzheimer\u2019s, age-related vision and hearing loss, or neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson\u2019s and dementia.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">The goal is to give users, including medical students, nurses, certified nursing assistants, assisted-living staff members and family caregivers, a better understanding of the challenges facing aging adults with these diseases or impairments through a first-person patient perspective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Medical students, for example, can use the Embodied Labs V.R. headset and computer software for a\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/embodiedlabs.com\/content-library\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">20-minute training\u00a0<\/a>program with 360-degree medical illustrations of changes in the brain structure and activity. They can also tap into an immersive visual experience in which the student virtually enters the world of Beatriz, a middle-age woman, as she advances through a decade of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\">\n<div id=\"c-col-editors-picks\" class=\"css-j64t31\">\n<p class=\"css-ohexsw\"><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">In another program, users embody Alfred, a 74-year-old man with high frequency hearing loss and age-related macular degeneration. The idea is to show that hearing and vision loss can make someone appear to have cognitive impairment although they do not.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">The program experience is a day in Alfred\u2019s life, including interaction with his doctor and his family. With the virtual reality goggles, the viewer\u2019s eyesight is reduced by a dark spot in the middle of the visual field simulating macular degeneration. The diminishing vision makes eye contact, communication and easy tasks difficult and frustrating. Photo courtesy of Embodied Labs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Embodied Labs\u2019 latest program, launched in June, is the Eden Lab, which simulates experiences of older L.G.B.T. adults. \u201cMisconceptions based on ageism, homophobia and transphobia can lead to health disparities that impact physical and mental health,\u201d Ms. Shaw said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat I try to do with Embodied Labs is to provide that understanding gap, so people can get to that point faster than I did,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s the convergence of aging, emerging technology and the need to transform our work force training methods in health and aging care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Start-up funds to develop the platform and the software came from a handful of angel investors, friends and family. In addition, Ms. Shaw competed for grants and no-interest loans and received $250,000 as the 2018 winner of the XR Education Prize Challenge funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">This year, the company received seed funding of $3.2 million from several venture capital funds, including the\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wxrfund.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WXR Fund,<\/a>\u00a0which invests in women entrepreneurs and in the next wave of computing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">\u201cThe opportunities for immersive technology in health care are vast and span telehealth, therapeutics and diagnostics, training and more,\u201d said Martina Welkhoff, co-founder and managing partner of the WXR Fund.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">\u201cHumans instinctively communicate and learn in 3-D, so immersive technology is particularly powerful in complex, high-stakes systems such as health care,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">The company sells a kit of hardware plus a software license to over 100 subscribers, including senior living communities like\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bhshealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Benedictine Health System<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/frontporch.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Front Porch<\/a>;\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greatcall.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GreatCall<\/a>, which sells senior cellphones, medical alert systems and mobile medical alerts; as well as over 40 universities and medical schools; and government aging agencies. I realized, for instance, that this is how I would want someone to talk to me if I have Alzheimer\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Ms. Shaw said she realized that immersive technology was changing rapidly and that staying on top of it was challenging. \u201cThe platform where we are starting is the first bridge,\u201d she said. \u201cThe technology can improve our health, not just in training, but in wellness and in therapy in everyday ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Ms. Shaw\u2019s mother died the month Embodied Labs launched. She was 61. \u201cAs I am building this company, I think of my mom all the time,\u201d Ms. Shaw said. \u201cIt would have been wonderful if she could have put on goggles that would have helped her do art, or physical therapy, in a fun way that would have extended her own abilities. I\u2019m aging myself.
