Try a Trade<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"css-18sbwfn\">\n<div class=\"css-1h6whtw\">\n<p class=\"css-1tyen8a e2kc3sl0\">Rosabeth Moss Kanter, a Harvard Business School professor who is director of the\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/advancedleadership.harvard.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leadership initiative<\/a>, said the program was started \u201cto deploy a new leadership force of people transitioning from their main career to their next years of service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1tyen8a e2kc3sl0\">Todd Fisher, 52, a fellow in Harvard\u2019s program, was ready for a new challenge. He was a global chief administrative officer and partner of the private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts &amp; Company and, he said, \u201cI wanted to fundamentally shift my career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1tyen8a e2kc3sl0\">When Mr. Fisher turned 50, he heard about the program and started to make his plan. \u201cI was nervous about finding my new career,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m the type of guy who wants to go get things done. I felt it would be valuable for me to be in a stimulating environment, where I had to develop different routines and to detox, or reprogram.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"EmbeddedIframe-MEDIUM--2Doaq\">\n<div class=\"EmbeddedIframe-embedded--dbTIM styles-embeddedInteractive--2frSu styles-sizeMediumInteractive--3izvz\" data-id=\"100000005831702\" data-slug=\"08learning-essay\"><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">This semester, Mr. Fisher is enrolled in a course on community colleges and another on leaders and leadership in history at the Harvard Kennedy School. His aim is to figure out his \u201cnext direction, to have a little bit of fun, make some new friends and to broaden my perspective and life,\u201d he said. \u201cI did not retire in the classic sense of the word. I do want to throw myself into something else: a true second career.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-18sbwfn\">\n<div class=\"css-1h6whtw\">\n<p class=\"css-1tyen8a e2kc3sl0\">In addition to the Stanford and Harvard programs, there are a handful of other educational programs for Gen Xers and baby boomers eyeing a second act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1tyen8a e2kc3sl0\">Later this year, for example, the University of Notre Dame will start the\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/ili.nd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inspired Leadership Initiative<\/a>, a one-year program for \u201caccomplished leaders at the end of their careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1tyen8a e2kc3sl0\">The University of Texas at Austin will also welcome later this year its first cadre for its nine-month\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/towerfellows.utexas.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tower Fellows Program<\/a>\u00a0for those who \u201chave built a career of major accomplishments (20 to 30 years) and who now seek to deepen their knowledge and\/or embrace new fields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\"><span class=\"css-1baulvz\">Kerry Hannon<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-14jsv4e\">\n<div class=\"css-z3qape ek9z99y2\">\n<p class=\"css-i1nf0c\">A version of this article appears in print in\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;
