It kicked in her memories of growing up in Bedford, Mass., in a mansard-style house built in 1840 and learning from her father how to repair and restore woodwork.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">\u201cIt was a fun thing I did with him, working with my hands and helping him fix things,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Read on<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/05\/education\/learning\/white-collar-to-blue-collar.html\"> The New York Times<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">So in 2014 she decided to pursue a career as a carpenter, and she is now on the cusp of completing her fourth year in a carpentry apprentice program at the\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/kmlcarpenters.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keystone Mountain Lakes Regional Council of Carpenters<\/a>\u00a0in Pittsburgh. Her skills fit the job: She is detail-oriented, which is crucial to making accurate cuts. That translates to a need for workers who have these skills in many regions across the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-14jsv4e emamhsk1\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"EmbeddedIframe-MEDIUM--2Doaq\">\n<div class=\"EmbeddedIframe-embedded--dbTIM styles-embeddedInteractive--2frSu styles-sizeMediumInteractive--3izvz\" data-id=\"100000005833651\" data-slug=\"08learning-promo\"><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">In Western Pennsylvania, for example, nonresidential construction is booming, and there is no sign of lessening, said Jeff Nobers, executive director of the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buildersguild.org\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Builders Guild of Western Pennsylvania<\/a><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">. \u201cAnd starting in 2022, we\u2019re going to begin losing some 15,000 people over a five-year period to retirement.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"StoryBodyCompanionColumn css-1bytduc emamhsk0\">\n<div class=\"css-w71pwo emamhsk2\">\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">Mr. Nobers said that he was seeing more people who had graduated from college and started a white-collar career moving into the trades. \u201cThey got out and worked for a few years and determined they didn\u2019t like what they were doing, or realized there was no real upside future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">Most transitioning workers learn the trade through an apprenticeship. These programs generally run from three to five years, based on a 2,000-hour year. That breaks down to 10 percent in the classroom, or 200 hours a year, where apprentices learn specific trade skills along with local building codes, blueprint reading, mathematics and more. The bulk of their time, 1,800 hours, is on the job, Mr. Nobers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">There are people at all ages going through a career with a mundane job who have been unexcited about going into work and are looking at these skilled-trade jobs with increasing interest, said Bryan Kamm, a work force\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bkammconsulting.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consultant<\/a>\u00a0who is leading an apprenticeship initiative in Florida\u2019s Cape Kennedy area called the Space Coast Consortium Apprenticeship Initiative.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"StoryBodyCompanionColumn css-1bytduc emamhsk0\">\n<div class=\"css-w71pwo emamhsk2\">\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">\u201cThese manufacturing apprenticeships are no longer blue-collar work,\u201d Mr. Kamm said, \u201cbut require highly technically advanced skills that include a great command of mathematics, physics, hydraulics, robotics and information technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"StoryBodyCompanionColumn css-1bytduc emamhsk0\">\n<div class=\"css-w71pwo emamhsk2\">\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">American employers have been saying for years that they have a tough time finding workers to fill many skilled blue-collar jobs. A 2015\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.themanufacturinginstitute.org\/~\/media\/827DBC76533942679A15EF7067A704CD.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report from the Manufacturing Institute<\/a>, for example, found that seven out of 10 executives reported shortages of workers with adequate technology, computer and technical training skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">By 2025, nearly three and a half million manufacturing jobs will likely need to be filled and the skills gap is expected to result in two million of those jobs going unfilled, according to the analysis. Factors contributing to the gap: baby boomer retirements and economic expansion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">Employment of plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters, for instance, is projected to grow 16 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations,\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/construction-and-extraction\/plumbers-pipefitters-and-steamfitters.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>. New construction, building maintenance, and the repair of homes and offices are expected to drive demand for these workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">There is not a lot of hard data to suggest a big shift from white-collar workers into blue-collar jobs, but there is a strong push to recruit them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">\u201cIf you talk to manufacturers, they will tell you they are working hard to change the image of manufacturing jobs from dirty, dangerous jobs to being quasi-white collar,\u201d said Paul Osterman, a professor at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-director of the M.I.T. Sloan Institute for Work and Employment Research. \u201cAnd today many of these workers need to be skilled with computers and statistical quality control processes. In some sense, manufacturing looks a lot more white-collar-ish than it used to.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-14jsv4e emamhsk1\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"css-1ardp2d e1a8i6eb0\" role=\"group\" aria-label=\"media\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"StoryBodyCompanionColumn css-1bytduc emamhsk0\">\n<div class=\"css-w71pwo emamhsk2\">\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">Anthony Carnevale, director of the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, said there was not a clear pathway to go from white collar to blue collar. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to have some transferability between the skills you did in one job that transfer to the next job,\u201d Mr. Carnevale said. \u201cFor most people, there is very little transfer between white-collar work, and say, plumbing. There is some transferability, but it\u2019s rare.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-14jsv4e emamhsk1\"><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-ad-3-wrapper\" class=\"ResponsiveAd-storyBodyAd--35v2w\">\n<div id=\"story-ad-3-slug\" class=\"ResponsiveAd-adSlug--3H3QM\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Scott Lacerra, 37, of Rockford, Ill., is another rare one. He has a bachelor of science degree from Drake University, where he majored in finance. After college he worked as a credit analyst, but he said he was miserable crunching numbers on a spreadsheet all day and sitting in a cubicle.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"StoryBodyCompanionColumn css-1bytduc emamhsk0\">\n<div class=\"css-w71pwo emamhsk2\">\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">Three and a half years ago, he walked into a local manufacturing shop looking for new opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">He landed the job at\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rgmfg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RG Manufacturing and Machining<\/a>\u00a0in Machesney Park, Ill., and soon enrolled in the employer-sponsored apprenticeship program. He takes classes each weeknight in topics such as blueprint reading and AutoCAD at\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rockvalleycollege.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rock Valley College<\/a>, along with 20 other apprentices in the\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rrvtma.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rock River Valley Tooling &amp; Machining Association<\/a>program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">Mr. Lacerra started as a part-time operator running a computer numeric controlled heavy machine. Soon he was driving a fork lift, making steel deliveries and training apprentices. \u201cI didn\u2019t have any experience, but I showed up every day and after a couple of weeks, I realized I really enjoyed it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">In May, he will complete his apprenticeship and be awarded a journeyman certificate as a C.N.C. precision machinist. \u201cWe pay for the classes and the books, which run $650 a class for 10 classes,\u201d said Ed Schroeder, the owner of RG Manufacturing and Machining. \u201cHe already had a college education, and people who have that can see the value in it and of striving to do more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1cy1v93 e2kc3sl0\">Ms. Grey said that as a college graduate and someone who had a job at an architecture firm, she was now very proud to tell people that this is what a woman in construction looks like. \u201cIt\u2019s not Bob the Builder,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>By<a href=\"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\">\u00a0<span class=\"css-1baulvz\">Kerry Hannon<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:20px;
