Mr. Metoli\u2019s back started bothering him, and his job, which involved standing most of the day and lifting wire, gears and tooling, became impossible for him to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"318\" data-total-count=\"757\">\u201cWe gave him an opportunity to take an office position that would be less physically strenuous,\u201d said Steve Kempf, the chief executive. \u201cHe joined our team of engineers charged with creating the work orders for jobs going out into the factory.\u201d The company arranged and paid for the necessary training courses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"10\" data-total-count=\"767\">It worked.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"10\" data-total-count=\"767\"><strong>Read this story on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/02\/business\/retirement\/aging-workers-opportunity.html\">The New York Times<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"225\" data-total-count=\"992\">He was immediately able to pass his insights on to the younger engineers, who had never operated the machines, Mr. Metoli said, and \u201cthe engineers were able to explain their knowledge of spring design and software to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"92\" data-total-count=\"1084\">Mr. Metoli has continued to work in a position that doesn\u2019t hurt his back, Mr. Kempf said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"320\" data-total-count=\"1404\">More than half of American baby boomers plan to work past age 65 or not retire at all, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.transamericacenter.org\/docs\/default-source\/retirement-survey-of-workers\/tcrs2016_pr_retirement_survey_of_workers_compendium.pdf\">report<\/a>\u00a0by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. Many worry that they will outlive their savings, that Social Security benefits will be reduced, and that they may someday need expensive long-term medical care.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-interrupter\">\n<div id=\"FlexAd\" class=\"ad flex-ad nocontent robots-nocontent\">\n<div class=\"flex-ad-creative\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Two age groups, 65 to 74 years old and 75 and older, are projected to have faster annual rates of labor force growth than that of any others, according to the\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/careeroutlook\/2017\/article\/older-workers.htm\">Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/a><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u00a0Over the decade from 2014 to 2024, the labor force growth rate for 65- to 74-year-olds is expected to be about 4.5 percent annually, and about 6.4 percent annually for those 75 and older. Lee Spring was among 13 businesses and nonprofits based in New York City that recently received Age Smart Employer Awards through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailman.columbia.edu\/research\/age-smart-employer\">program,<\/a>\u00a0now in its third year, that is a project of the Columbia Aging Center at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"254\" data-total-count=\"2602\">Those employers offer training and education opportunities and flexible scheduling; adapt physical tasks to the abilities of workers; provide advancement and leadership training for workers of all ages; retrain older workers; and allow phased retirement.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"235\" data-total-count=\"2837\">\u201cWe\u2019ve increased our life expectancy by 50 percent in the last 100 years,\u201d said Dr. Linda Fried, dean of the Mailman School. \u201cNow we have to design society for longer lives, and these awards, I think, are a linchpin of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"113\" data-total-count=\"2950\">One hundred businesses and nonprofits entered the 2017 Age Smart Employer competition, double the number in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"73\" data-total-count=\"3023\">Here are four other companies with pioneering programs for older workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"166\" data-total-count=\"3189\"><strong>\u2022<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huntingtoningalls.com\/\">Huntington Ingalls Industries,\u00a0<\/a>the largest military shipbuilding company in the United States, operates\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.as.edu\/\">The A<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.as.edu\/\">pprentice S<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.as.edu\/\">chool<\/a>\u00a0at its Newport News, Va., division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"260\" data-total-count=\"3449\">\u201cWe don\u2019t have an age limit,\u201d said Susan Jacobs, vice president for human resources and administration with Newport News Shipbuilding. \u201cEmployees go into The Apprentice School well past the age of what you would think a traditional student would be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"139\" data-total-count=\"3588\">The company\u2019s overall work force of 22,000 is composed of 38 percent baby boomers, 40 percent millennials and 20 percent Generation Xers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-4\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"266\" data-total-count=\"3854\">\u201cNearly half of our employees could retire at any day,\u201d Ms. Jacobs said. \u201cThat puts us in a risky situation, and we certainly don\u2019t want those people to retire. Being a master shipbuilder is not easy, and it takes an awful lot of time to become an expert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"292\" data-total-count=\"4146\">To keep its aging work force engaged with their work, there are intergenerational mentoring programs. Younger workers mentor older ones, too. \u201cWhat we have found is that the younger workers are helping employees who have been here longer get really comfortable with using the technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"292\" data-total-count=\"4146\">\u2022 Accounting firm partners over age 60, who are frequently forced out by mandatory retirement practices, are just the kind of talent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pkfod.com\/\">PKF O\u2019Connor Davies<\/a>, part of a network of independent accounting and advisory firms in 440 cities and 150 countries, is happy to hire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"342\" data-total-count=\"4759\">Many of the firm\u2019s 800 employees, who range in age from 21 to 83, have the option to work shorter workweeks or flexible hours. Some employees have relocated to an office nearer to home to allow for a shorter commute, or work part time from home. Employees nearing retirement have been permitted to reduce their hours or work as consultants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"302\" data-total-count=\"5061\">\u201cHiring older workers for our team has been a home run for us as well as for workers about to go into retirement or in retirement,\u201d said Thomas F. Blaney, a partner and director of the firm\u2019s Foundation Services, based in New York. \u201cIt\u2019s not about age really. We just want talented people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"184\" data-total-count=\"5245\">\u2022\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.silvercupstudios.com\/\">Silvercup Studios<\/a>\u00a0is a family-owned film and television production company in New York where shows like \u201cThe Sopranos,\u201d \u201cGirls\u201d and \u201cSex and the City\u201d have been filmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"165\" data-total-count=\"5410\">With studios in Long Island City and the Bronx, it employs 49, and more than half are over 50. Two workers recently celebrated their 30th anniversary with Silvercup.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"239\" data-total-count=\"5649\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t sit around and say, \u2018O.K., we are going to have a plan to hire and keep older workers,\u2019\u201d said Gary Kesner, executive vice president for Silvercup. \u201cIt is not part of an overall program. It just makes sense for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"story-continues-5\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"217\" data-total-count=\"5866\">Hiring people with experience presents distinct advantages. \u201cThey\u2019re more settled,\u201d Mr. Kesner said. \u201cThere\u2019s more sense of loyalty. And it costs more to bring in new staff than it costs to retain people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"311\" data-total-count=\"6177\">\u2022 The furniture maker\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelcase.com\/\">Steelcase<\/a>, headquartered in Grand Rapids, Mich., offers workers a phased retirement program with reduced and part-time hours. Facing a large number of retiring boomers, especially in the IT and manufacturing skilled trades departments, the company began a phased retirement plan in 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"133\" data-total-count=\"6310\">For the past year and a half, David Rinard, 62, director of environmental special projects, has been transitioning toward retirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"232\" data-total-count=\"6542\">He started his career at Steelcase in 1979 as an assistant environmental engineer and moved steadily up the ranks to director of global environmental performance, a position he held for 13 years. Today, he calls himself semiretired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"296\" data-total-count=\"6838\">The program has allowed him to spend more time with his wife, who is six years older and retired, while earning an income and not worrying about health care coverage before he is eligible for Medicare at 65, he said.
