Meanwhile, more than half of Americans ages 50 to 64 are working and not retired, according to data from the <a class=\"inline_asset\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apnorc.org\/pdfs\/working%20longer\/ap-norc%20center_working%20longer%20report-final.pdf\" target=\"_self\">Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"teads-inread\">\u00a0Indeed, older employees may continue working because they need to strengthen their finances.<\/div>\n<div id=\"inline_movable_ad\">\u00a0Recent data from the Employee Benefit Research Institute showed that nearly 80 percent of workers say that they&#8217;d like to continue working after retirement.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group-container \">\n<div class=\"embed-container image\">\n<div class=\"attribution\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"attribution\">The 9-to-5 routine doesn&#8217;t have to be a grind \u2014 if you plan for it, said <a href=\"http:www.kerryhannon.com\"><strong>Kerry Hannon<\/strong><\/a>, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1119022843?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=1119022843&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=kerrhann-20\">&#8220;Getting the Job You Want After 50.&#8221;<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;If there&#8217;s a kind of work that you want to move toward when you retire, it&#8217;s important to give yourself time to try things out, get the skills and do the job first to see if it&#8217;s something that will catch you on fire,&#8221;<strong> she said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group-container \">\n<h4 class=\"subtitle\">The workplace on your terms<\/h4>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>There&#8217;s no denying that a longer career will keep you from tapping your retirement accounts and will extend your access to workplace health benefits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hannon<\/strong> said, however, that there are psychological benefits for older Americans who continue to live a 9-to-5 life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People go into mourning when they retire,&#8221; <strong>she said.<\/strong> &#8220;Your whole identity is caught up in who you are and what you did.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/03\/23\/heres-the-secret-to-a-rewarding-retirement-keep-working.html\">Read on CNBC <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Continuing to work provides social benefits, including feeling relevant,&#8221; <strong>Hannon<\/strong> added.<\/p>\n<p>The next phase of your career doesn&#8217;t have to be a reprise of your current gig, either. Rather, you can see how your current experience will transition to a different field.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re not reinventing yourself, you&#8217;re redeploying,&#8221;<strong> she said.<\/strong> &#8220;Maybe you&#8217;re taking what you&#8217;re good at and redeploying into a new arena.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some employers offer workers <a class=\"inline_asset\" title=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/103854055\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/103854055\" target=\"_self\">flexible retirement options<\/a> to keep their older employees on board.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group-container \">\n<div class=\"group\"><strong>\u00a0Five-year horizon<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group-container \">\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><strong>Hannon<\/strong> recommends that you give yourself a five-year time horizon before you make the leap into your next career adventure.<\/p>\n<p>That is, if you want to retire to a new job at 65, start thinking about how to do it when you&#8217;re 60.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group-container \">\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"quote\">&#8220;<\/span><span class=\"quote\">People go into mourning when they retire. Here are the first steps you can take toward finding your encore career, <strong>according to Hannon:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Do some soul-searching: <\/strong>Think deeply about the abilities you&#8217;ve acquired during your career and how you might be able to use them in your new gig. Do you really want to turn a hobby into your full-time obsession? You should also think about how many hours you want to work. A gig as a consultant might give you more flexibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do a test-drive: <\/strong>Volunteer or moonlight in your new job before you make the leap from your current gig.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Network: <\/strong>Get back in touch with your alumni and industry groups and see what kind of work is available. Find people who are already doing the job you&#8217;d like to do, and ask them how they prepared themselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research: A<\/strong>s you burnish your resume, do your homework on the web. Find a post that will let your years of experience shine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clean up your finances: Yo<\/strong>u&#8217;ll feel less constrained during your job search if you don&#8217;t have large debts hanging over your head.
