How will, we, as a nation, make the most of this talent and experience?”

There are many high-flyers who have gone from success to even greater significance—consider Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Al Gore. Of those workers surveyed who are not already in second careers, half are interested in them.

While these work transitions involve following a dream or a calling, you don’t want to get caught up in the romance of it all. “There is a blitheness that all you have to do is embrace your passion and the rest happens magically,” Freedman warns. “It’s not that easy. You have to be courageous, creative, passionate and strategic.”

What started Freeman down this path? Freedman was working for a Philadelphia nonprofit in the 1990s when he helped start a mentor program that paired older adults with inner-city kids struggling to do get some traction in school with better grades and more. Freedman’s challenge was finding enough adult volunteers, so thousands of kids stayed on the waiting list for help. It got him thinking about the “untapped human resource” that people over 50 can offer to society, and he took action.

Freedman has been described by The New York Times as “the voice of aging baby boomers who are eschewing retirement for … meaningful and sustaining work later in life,” while The Wall Street Journal stated, “In the past decade, Mr. Freedman has emerged as a leading voice in discussions nationwide about the changing face of retirement.”

He is author of Encore: Finding Work That Matters in the Second Half of Life. His forthcoming book, The Big Shift: Navigating the New Stage Between Midlife and Old Age, will be published in March 2011. Pollack Award of the Gerontological Society of America and membership in the Innovators Network of The Japan Society. The NonProfit Times named him one of the 50 most powerful and influential individuals in the nonprofit sector in 2010.
