Negotiation before starting a job is key. \u201cOnce you get inside your workplace,\u201d says author Kerry Hannon, \u201cgetting those raises gets harder and harder.\u201d Raises tend to be incremental, around 3% this year, but if you change companies, you could negotiate your salary much higher than that. A higher starting salary has repercussions down the line, like saving more for retirement. Do some reconnaissance about the company\u2019s salary ranges if you can. And remember: \u201cAny time someone hires you, it\u2019s not about you; it\u2019s about them,\u201d says Hannon. \u201cIt\u2019s what you can do for them.\u201d<\/p>\n
