Stay on top of\u00a0technology and changes in the field. Sign up for computer workshops online, at local\u00a0colleges, adult education or senior centers. Do you need to go back to school to get a\u00a0certification? (Many community colleges offer age 50+ retraining.) Let employers know\u00a0you have a collaborative work style with workers of any age. You must have a good LinkedIn profile\u00a0with a professional-looking headshot. Not including a photo doesn\u2019t preclude age\u00a0discrimination, but eliminates many opportunities. According to LinkedIn, recruiters\u00a0are 11 times more likely to click on a profile that has a photo than one without. Get\u00a0active in industry groups on LinkedIn, post interesting articles, and participate in<\/div>\n<div>discussions. It\u2019s also a great way to pull together your professional network.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><em>How important is it for older workers to be on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+?<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A great online presence gives you an edge. Using social media properly allows recruiters\u00a0to discover you, and for you to unearth job openings. You can reconnect with past\u00a0colleagues and pals from across the decades now working in industries or companies\u00a0you\u2019d like to join. This simple and subtle networking is essential for everyone. If you\u2019re\u00a0not adept at social media, take a class or ask your niece, son, or a kid in the\u00a0neighborhood, for help.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><em>What else do you need?<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A professional e-mail address like Gmail, not\u00a0AOL or Yahoo, which will date you.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><em>Can you market your age as an asset?<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Yes. You need to articulate your value. Workers\u00a050+ tend to be self-starters, know how to get the\u00a0job done, and don\u2019t need as much hand-holding<br \/>\n as those with less experience. A great benefit to\u00a0being older is that you have a good deal of\u00a0knowledge and leadership ability. Chances are\u00a0you will be hired over someone with less in their\u00a0quiver and in need of training. Look at your skill\u00a0set and past experience as transferable to lots of<br \/>\n different challenges and fields. Nonprofits and\u00a0small businesses are good for older workers. They\u00a0often need your chops, although you may have to work for less.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><em>Older workers are competing with younger job seekers who may not command as much\u00a0<\/em><em>money. Should a worker later in life be willing to sacrifice some salary for a job?<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>Absolutely. At this stage, it\u2019s always best to get in the door and sacrifice money for a job\u00a0you want to do. You might be able to negotiate for nonsalary compensation to offset\u00a0your paycheck such as more vacation, flextime, work from home, even four-day weeks.\u00a0If you perform well, they may bump up your salary.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><em>Does it send a bad signal to accept less money?<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>If you like the job and want it or need it, it\u2019s not worth being hard-line. It is also always\u00a0easier to find a job when you have a job. So accept it, and then keep looking discreetly.\u00a0In the meantime, you\u2019re keeping your resume alive and your confidence up.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><em>What if you\u2019re unemployed?<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Do something every day. Ask for advice and talk to people doing the jobs you\u2019re\u00a0considering. If you\u2019re thinking of starting a business, volunteer, moonlight, get in there\u00a0and do the job and see if it\u2019s what you imagined it to be. Volunteering for a nonprofit\u00a0lets you test the waters, adds to your resume, and puts you in touch with people who\u00a0might know of a job opening or introduce you to someone who does.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><em>Don\u2019t a few companies have programs that pay a stipend to soon-to-be-retired\u00a0employees so they can use their skills at a nonprofit and see if it might be their new\u00a0<\/em><em>career?<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>They\u2019re called \u201cencore careers,\u201d combining socially meaningful work with a paycheck.\u00a0Those jobs can turn into full-time positions or lead to other part-time or full-time work.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>W<em>hat do you think makes the people you\u2019ve interviewed so successful at making a\u00a0<\/em><em>career transition or starting their own businesses?<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>They haven\u2019t made rash moves. So, if you are beginning to think about the next chapter,\u00a0start planning at age 55 what you want to do at age 60 or at 60 for 65.
