Drucker, the political economist and author, passed away in 2005 at the age of 95, he was legendary in business circles and often called the \u201cfather of modern management.\u201d His future-oriented writings were required reading for business school students nationwide.<\/h3>\n<\/hgroup>\n<div class=\"article_body article\" style=\"color: #000000;\">\n<div class=\"body\">\n<div class=\"body_inner\">\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">But I knew very little about him. And I certainly never considered how his thinking on the workplace related to individual career paths and second acts, in particular, a topic near and dear to my heart. I honestly didn\u2019t imagine his ideas would be relevant today and would resonate with the growing cohort of workers embarking on second acts post 50.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Well I was wrong. I recently received a new book by Drucker scholar and author Bruce Rosenstein,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #555555;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Create-Your-Future-Peter-Drucker\/dp\/0071820809\"><i>Create Your Future the Peter Drucker Way<\/i><\/a><i>.\u00a0<\/i>As I read along, I found myself putting sticky tabs on page after page. In fact, I found myself nodding as I turned the pages, soaking up his all so timely wisdom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">I immediately emailed Rosenstein and asked if he had time for an interview with me. He did, and I will get to it in a minute.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">But here\u2019s what blew me away. Drucker, who I always viewed as an elder statesman type, even stodgy perhaps, and someone only management types followed, really got it. He was truly prescient.<\/p>\n<div id=\"article_container_0_loge\" class=\"loge_ad ad_initialized article_body_ad\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/7175\/fdc.forbes\/article-new_3__container__\">Turns out, he\u2019s a darn good role model for what you and I need to do to succeed in this next chapter of our lives whatever work we choose-paid or unpaid, full-time or part-time.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kerryhannon\/2014\/07\/09\/what-would-peter-drucker-advise-second-acters\/\">CHECK OUT ARTICLE ON FORBES\u00a0<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Rosenstein deftly draws on his own knowledge and that of his mentor to convey a strategy to create a successful second act.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">For instance, Rosenstein writes about a commencement address that Drucker made to the graduating students at the \u00a0University of Scranton, in Scranton, PA on May 31, 1964. And consider clues from the recent and distant past. This aligns with\u00a0<a style=\"color: #555555;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.druckerinstitute.com\/link\/about-peter-drucker\/\">Peter Drucker\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0construct of \u201cthe future that has already happened.\u201d For instance, a new or lifelong interest in healing might lead to a second act in a field such as nursing, massage therapy or health information management.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Also consider clues that come from emerging issues, trends and developments. Today you can find these virtually everywhere\u2014in business, government, health care, technology and beyond.<\/p>\n<div id=\"article_container_0_recx_0\" class=\"recx_ad ad_initialized article_body_ad\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">I also recommend keeping a notebook or file on the future. Capture thoughts, ideas, resources\u2014anything that might inform and inspire your next chapter. Keep an open mind, and cast a wide net. In time you can figure out what\u2019s most relevant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Another idea is to form a book club or study group focused on future-oriented topics. Occasionally bring in guest experts to lead your discussion.<\/p>\n<p><b style=\"font-weight: bold;\">KH: Why is it important to build your future beyond your current workplace in all aspects of your life as you prepare to create a second act?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rosenstein:<\/strong>\u00a0If work is your only source of satisfaction and self-worth, and you lose your job, you almost certainly will be crushed. Drucker stressed the importance of living multi-dimensionally, inside and outside the workplace. In one of our interviews, he described this to me as \u201c<a style=\"color: #555555;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Living-More-Than-One-World\/dp\/1576759687\/ref=la_B0029HMIZW_1_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1404754642&amp;sr=1-2\">living in more than one world.\u201d\u00a0<\/a>The idea resonated so deeply that it became the focus (and title!) of my first book.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Advance your growth and development in diverse ways\u2014deepening your religious or spiritual practices, serving others (through, say, volunteerism, teaching or mentoring) and committing to lifelong learning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Also enrich or expand areas outside of work: family activities, social clubs, sports and exercise, mind-body work, artistic endeavors\u2014whatever cultivates more purpose and meaning in your life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><b style=\"font-weight: bold;\">KH: How can Peter Drucker\u2019s strategies for rolling with the punches help entrepreneurial second-acters?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"article_container_0_recx_1\" class=\"recx_ad ad_initialized article_body_ad\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/7175\/fdc.forbes\/article-new_5__container__\"><strong style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rosenstein:<\/strong>\u00a0One strategy is to run with success and, on the contrary, not worry when things don\u2019t work out. Drucker said if you haven\u2019t succeeded after two tries, try something else. And he encouraged people to focus on strengths rather than weaknesses, on opportunities rather than threats. This isn\u2019t about turning a blind eye to problems; it\u2019s about putting them in context.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><b style=\"font-weight: bold;\">KH: What are your favorite Drucker ideas that can help motivate wannabe second acters to take action, find purpose, relevance, and succeed in their next chapter?<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rosenstein:<\/strong>\u00a0For starters, strive to do work that genuinely benefits others. Drucker advocated thinking and acting as any good CEO would\u2014considering not only what serves you but also your family, your personal and professional stakeholders, your various communities and perhaps even mankind. Seek out opportunities, whether in the for-profit or nonprofit world, that can help you, help others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Another useful idea, especially today, is to make friends with change. Drucker said, \u201cThe most effective way to manage change successfully is to create it.\u201d Aspire, then, to be more than an agent of change. Be a\u00a0<i>leader\u00a0<\/i>of change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">In Drucker\u2019s book\u00a0<i>The Age of Discontinuity,\u00a0<\/i>he proposes asking yourself the big existential questions of life. Among them: Who am I? What am I? What do I want to be? What do I want to put into life, and what do I want to get out of it? And what do I want to be remembered for? Questions such as these can be a great guide to finding purpose, relevance, and success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\"><b style=\"font-weight: bold;\">KH: How can following some of Drucker\u2019s teachings help alleviate the inevitable anxiety and fear of the future as we age?<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"article_container_0_recx_2\" class=\"recx_ad ad_initialized article_body_ad\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/7175\/fdc.forbes\/article-new_6__container__\"><strong style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Rosenstein:<\/strong>\u00a0Fear of the future stems from the future\u2019s ambiguity. In my new book\u00a0<a style=\"color: #555555;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Create-Your-Future-Peter-Drucker\/dp\/0071820809\"><i>Create Your Future the Peter Drucker Way<\/i>,<\/a>\u00a0I draw on Drucker\u2019s most salient ideas to identify 10 defining elements of the future. (Seven are outlined in the accompanying slide show.) My intent is to offer people a framework for navigating their journey.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">I also suggest practicing what Drucker called systematic abandonment\u2014that is, to intentionally remove things that are no longer useful or productive. This frees up precious time and energy, which usually helps alleviate anxiety. Drucker recommended pairing systematic abandonment with\u00a0<i>kaizen:<\/i>\u00a0steady and incremental improvement of what remains.
