\"market\"<\/a>The urge to switch careers can strike older workers for a variety of reasons\u2014an unexpected job loss, fear about dimming prospects in their current industry, or simply a yen for change\u2014but there are pitfalls of which to be wary.<\/p>\n

Certainly, one mistake is to rush the decision. If you have the luxury of time\u2014that is to say, a current job\u2014consider taking three years to plan. Depending on your financial situation, \u201cyou might have to do it incrementally,\u201d said Kerry Hannon, a Washington-based career expert and author of \u201cGreat Jobs for Everyone 50+.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou need a job that pays the bills now. Then, on the side, take the classes you need, build those skills you need,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve interviewed hundreds and hundreds of these folks,\u201d Hannon added. \u201cAnyone who has had at least three years of planning\u2014they\u2019re not unemployed those three years, but they\u2019re planning for what they want to do\u2014all of them succeeded if they gave themselves that much time.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Those who did it faster? Often, they \u201cnever got that traction,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
