{"id":10842,"date":"2026-07-29T07:13:26","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T11:13:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\/?p=10842"},"modified":"2026-07-29T07:14:50","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T11:14:50","slug":"workers-are-confident-in-their-skills-despite-economic-jitters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\/?p=10842","title":{"rendered":"Workers are confident in their skills despite economic jitters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"byline yf-z1ictt\">\n<div class=\"byline-attr yf-z1ictt\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"byline-share yf-z1ictt\">\n<div class=\"byline-comments-desktop yf-z1ictt\">Workers aren&#8217;t just waiting for the economy to improve \u2014 they&#8217;re also betting on their skills.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"body-wrap yf-1qcy35b\">\n<div class=\"body yf-v6n2s3\" data-testid=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"bodyItems-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">Despite a stagnant job market, the looming doom of AI potentially replacing them, and persistent worries about pending layoffs, roughly 7 in 10 workers report high confidence that their skills would be valuable in roles at other organizations and would make them competitive in the job market, according to the Global Employee Monitor, a\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/topics-tools\/research\/the-global-employee-monitor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-ylk=\"slk:report;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;cpos:1;pos:1;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;report&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkPosition&quot;:&quot;1&quot;,&quot;yPosition&quot;:&quot;1&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" data-rapid_p=\"160\" data-y-link-id=\"0l4wktk1xu3spm0x98ni\" data-v9y=\"1\">report<\/a> published recently by SHRM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">Add to that this overwhelming swagger: More than 8 in 10 US workers boast that they &#8220;adapt effectively to changes in priorities, processes, or work environments, and that the quality of their work exceeds expectations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">&#8220;Workers are quite confident in their capabilities despite technological changes and the economic uncertainty that&#8217;s been permeating,&#8221; James Atkinson, vice president of thought leadership at SHRM, told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">&#8220;They are focused on the things that they can control,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They can&#8217;t control how the overall economy is shifting, the uncertainty, the ups and downs of that, but they&#8217;re optimistic about their own abilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">SHRM surveyed 10,789 workers across 26 countries from January to June. Participants were at least 18 years old and employed either full-time or part-time at organizations across a range of industries.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/economy\/article\/workers-remain-confident-in-their-skills-despite-economic-jitters-study-144639700.html\">Read on Yahoo Finance<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jump-link-trusting-their-own-skills\" class=\"text text-block heading text-left neo-font-heading-lg yf-18d6y07\" role=\"heading\">\u00a0&#8216;Trusting their own skills&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">While job-hugging is not going away, rather than trusting employers to offer job security, workers increasingly trust their own skills to create it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">Nearly 7 in 10 US workers said they&#8217;re more inclined to stay at their jobs than leave, but that hasn&#8217;t stopped them from seeing what&#8217;s out there \u2014 4 in 10 said they have actively searched for a new job in the past 12 months, and 30% said they&#8217;ve seriously considered quitting their jobs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">But they are leaning into shoring up what they have to offer. Workers are actively investing in new skills and adapting to change, Atkinson said. &#8220;They&#8217;re seeing the changes that are coming, and they&#8217;re working to figure out how to prepare themselves for that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jump-link-is-ai-coming-for-your-job\" class=\"text text-block heading text-left neo-font-heading-lg yf-18d6y07\" role=\"heading\">Is AI coming for your job?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">&#8220;Workers seem to be making a distinction about AI coming for jobs that most headlines miss,&#8221; Dan Schawbel, a workplace trends expert and managing partner of Workplace Intelligence, told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">&#8220;They&#8217;re not confident their current job is safe; they&#8217;re confident their skills are portable,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s a much smarter read on the labor market than blind optimism, because it means people are hedging against employer risk rather than ignoring it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">&#8220;That shift toward skills as the asset rather than the job is exactly the mindset that holds up best in downturns,&#8221; Schawbel added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"read-more-wrapper\" data-testid=\"read-more\">\n<h2 id=\"jump-link-what-they-bring\" class=\"text text-block heading text-left neo-font-heading-lg yf-18d6y07\" role=\"heading\">&#8216;What they bring&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">That fear of technological transformation is still there, Atkinson said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t want to minimize that, but it&#8217;s moving toward &#8216;let me figure it out and move forward with it.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">The upshot: Workers are adding credentials and certifications focused on targeted skills to highlight and leverage as they try to advance within their own organization or when they&#8217;re looking for other jobs, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">&#8220;Workers trust themselves now more than they trust the world around them \u2014 I find it heartening that even as the economy wobbles, their confidence in what they bring stays steady,&#8221; Nancy Ancowitz, a\u00a0<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nancyancowitz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-ylk=\"slk:career%20strategist;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;cpos:3;pos:1;source:content-canvas%20default\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;career strategist&quot;,&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkPosition&quot;:&quot;3&quot;,&quot;yPosition&quot;:&quot;1&quot;,&quot;yTrafficOrigin&quot;:&quot;content-canvas default&quot;}\" data-rapid_p=\"164\" data-y-link-id=\"16tsi1n1k76w4c1lukpv\" data-v9y=\"1\">career strategist<\/a>, told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">&#8220;My clients tell me the pressure to get and stay employed can be relentless,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Yet they keep adapting and delivering. We&#8217;ve become a workforce of chameleons.&#8221;Nearly 9 in 10 workers agreed they have effectively adjusted to changes in their work and have worked to build or improve the skills needed to navigate future shifts, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve spent years treating adaptability as some rare, prized trait, and now it looks like most of the workforce has just absorbed it as table stakes,&#8221; Schawbel said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">&#8220;People have been through enough disruption that navigating a new tool or a reorg doesn&#8217;t rattle them the way it used to,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s a quiet but real shift in how workers see themselves, and I think it&#8217;s the strongest counter to the narrative that workers are overwhelmed right now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jump-link-optimism-prevails\" class=\"text text-block heading text-left neo-font-heading-lg yf-18d6y07\" role=\"heading\">Optimism prevails<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">More than 8 in 10 workers reported feeling at least somewhat optimistic, including nearly 6 in 10 who described themselves as optimistic or very optimistic, compared with 17% who expressed some level of pessimism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">&#8220;Something sturdier is going on underneath,&#8221; Schawbel said. &#8220;My take is that workers have started pricing in uncertainty as the norm rather than treating it as a crisis every time a new headline hits. Nearly half of those surveyed by SHRM said pay is the top reason they were attracted to, stayed in, or left their jobs.\u00a0 Other less important lures ranged from benefits and job security to career advancement opportunities and work\/life balance, according to the research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg yf-18d6y07\">&#8220;People are still transactional about where they work and why,&#8221; Schawbel said. &#8220;Pay isn&#8217;t competing with purpose or culture anymore.
