Another 10 states have introduced bills regarding pay transparency but haven\u2019t yet passed a law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">\u201cPay transparency is impacting more than just compliance \u2014 and employees are taking notice, asking more questions than ever before,\u201d Seikaly said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Many have asked because they\u2019ve seen a job posting for the company and realized they were being paid less for a similar job, she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">\u201cPay transparency isn\u2019t creating problems \u2014ultimately, it\u2019s exposing ones that already exist,\u201d Seikaly said. \u201cIt puts a spotlight on inconsistent and unexplained pay variance that&#8217;s been quietly building for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">\u201cAnd most of the time, organizations aren\u2019t intentionally driving these issues, but they have been reluctant to look too closely, wary of what a deeper dive might reveal.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"job-hugging-vs-job-jumping\" class=\"header-scroll yf-1u6g9f6\"><strong>Job-hugging vs job-jumping<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Unfair pay perception is a leading reason that more than a quarter of employers report talented employees are jumping ship, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">If you\u2019re a worker, however, this is certainly not a great time to complain. It\u2019s your job to be well-prepared, which involves making the case about your past, present, and future impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">Even if you get a no now, you\u2019ve planted the seed in their mind that you want a raise, she added. When you ask again in six months or a year, they\u2019ll be more receptive to the idea because they\u2019ve had time to think about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\"><strong>Don\u2019t wing it.\u00a0<\/strong>This is an intentional negotiation. Gather data on what people are getting paid at your position, or cite the job posting from your employer that sparked your concern. Managers often don\u2019t approve raises just because someone asks. \u201cThey approve them when the business case is clear,\u201d Ancowitz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\"><strong>Consider your employer\u2019s alternatives, if they lose you.\u00a0<\/strong>If you leave, what would it cost them to replace you, ramp someone new, or redistribute your work? Looking at the decision from their side helps you frame a stronger business case, Ancowitz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\"><strong>Be a storyteller.\u00a0<\/strong>Walk into your meeting with talking points, not a memorized script. Be clear on your recent wins, measurable impact, expanded responsibilities, and market benchmarks, Ancowitz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">This is your time to tell your C.A.R. story: a challenge you recently faced, the action you took to solve it, and the specific tangible result. Numbers, statistics, and percentages catch people\u2019s attention. You completed a job three months ahead of schedule. Sales popped by 20% due to a new marketing program you designed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\"><strong>Play out the conversation ahead of time. <\/strong>Rehearse difficult conversations the way athletes rehearse plays, Ancowitz said. It\u2019s to sound prepared, calm, and confident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\"><strong>Treat it as a negotiation, not a demand.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cThe strongest salary conversations aren\u2019t framed as a battle of wills,\u201d Ancowitz said. They\u2019re framed around mutual benefit. Tie the raise to results, retention, or expanded responsibilities, and the case becomes easier for a manager to support internally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\"><strong>Ask after you\u2019ve scored a win.\u00a0<\/strong>Timing matters. If you can\u2019t get a raise, ask for other job sweeteners, say, new work equipment for your office, a title change or promotion without a pay increase (for now), professional development opportunities to attend workshops and skills training, remote flexibility, or extra personal days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1fy9kyt\">No one wants to feel less than, especially when it comes to pay, so you need to screw up the courage to be proactive.
