The open enrollment period runs through Dec. 7. During this time, those who are enrolled can make modifications to their coverage, which goes into effect on Jan. 1. You can switch between original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, change Medicare Advantage plans, and add or\u00a0<a class=\"link yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/medicare-drug-changes-are-coming-next-year-how-to-prepare-125049437.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:switch your Part D prescription drug plan;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-rapid_p=\"10\" data-v9y=\"1\">switch your Part D prescription drug plan<\/a>. And possibly add or change to a new Medigap policy.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/what-to-watch-out-for-in-your-2026-medicare-advantage-plan-123045304.html\">Read on Yahoo Finance<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Medicare Advantage is an alternative health insurance program to traditional Medicare for those 65 and older. The plans are run by private insurance companies such as UnitedHealthcare and Humana and have been soaring in popularity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">However, for 2026, some insurers are jettisoning plans, hospital systems, and doctors, paring back benefits and ramping up out-of-pocket costs, including deductibles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cSome insurers are deemphasizing or even pulling out of certain geographic markets,&#8221; Philip Moeller, a Medicare and Social Security expert, who writes the\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/philmoeller.substack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Aging in America;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"11\" data-v9y=\"1\">Aging in America<\/a> newsletter, told Yahoo Finance. &#8220;Variations among plan premiums, co-pays, and annual deductibles are unusually large, leading to large differences in out-of-pocket costs among plans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Case in point: UnitedHealthcare and Johns Hopkins Medicine ended their network contract in August. That means that most Johns Hopkins facilities and providers are now out of network for patients with UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans. \u201cIf your Johns Hopkins Medicine hospital doesn\u2019t participate with a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can use out-of-network benefits if your plan has them,\u201d according to\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/patient-care\/patients-visitors\/billing-insurance\/insurance-info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:the healthcare provider\u2019s website;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"12\" data-v9y=\"1\">the healthcare provider\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-americans-fell-in-love-with-medicare-advantage-plans\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>Why Americans fell in love with Medicare Advantage plans<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">More than half of eligible beneficiaries have enrolled in Medicare Advantage since 2023, according to KFF. A big sweetener is the perks not included in traditional Medicare, such as drug coverage (Part D), eyeglasses, dental coverage, gym memberships, and reimbursements for \u2014 believe it or not \u2014 bowling balls and pickleball paddles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Plus, they often have very low or even no premium costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">There are disadvantages. Most Medicare Advantage plans require prior authorization as a condition for coverage of services, a restriction only rarely required in traditional Medicare.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"read-more-wrapper\" data-testid=\"read-more\">\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Unlike original Medicare, depending on the Advantage plan, you\u2019re limited to a specific network of doctors and other healthcare providers, and those networks are often in flux from year to year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">It\u2019s not unusual to be referred to a specialist who is not part of your Medicare Advantage plan network. In those cases, you need prior authorization to make an appointment, or simply be prepared to pony up and pay the bill out of pocket.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Here are the 2026 Medicare Advantage plan changes you need to know.<\/p>\n<div class=\"iframe-wrapper yf-1pkrzq6\">\n<div class=\"iframe-container tw-h-full yf-j14njc\" data-testid=\"iframe-iframe-container\"><strong>Mistake watch<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Let\u2019s start with getting accurate information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Medicare\u2019s online searchable<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/plan-compare\/#\/?year=2023&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Plan Finder;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"15\" data-v9y=\"1\">\u00a0Plan Finder<\/a> on the Medicare.gov site allows you to review Medicare Advantage plan options. Every fall before open enrollment, Medicare loads all of the private plan data into this tool, including Part D drug plans, private Medicare Advantage plans, and even the Medigap plans, which are run by the states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cNew Medicare reporting rules for MA plans will allow consumers to see more details about the plans\u2019 supplemental benefits and, for the first time, the names of doctors, hospitals, and others in the plans\u2019 medical provider networks, Moeller said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">In the past, to get that information, you had to go to each plan\u2019s website or call each company or your doctors to see if they were part of the plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">That\u2019s super, in theory. \u201cInsurers\u2019 provider directories have contained many mistakes in the past, and there have already been accounts of mistakes in the new publicly accessible directories,\u201d Moeller said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Meanwhile, the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services (CMS) website states that due to the government shutdown, &#8220;updates to information on this website may be limited or delayed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">CMS has flagged consumers and has a plan to address the bad information. If you make your 2026 MA plan selection on directory information that turns out to be wrong, you <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicarerights.org\/medicare-watch\/2025\/09\/25\/final-rule-and-new-special-enrollment-period-will-aid-those-misled-by-provider-directories#:~:text=Rely%20on%20MPF%20provider%20directory,%2D800%2DMEDICARE%20for%20help.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:can change;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"16\" data-v9y=\"1\">can change\u00a0<\/a>your choice during the first three months of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cTo be safe, enrollees should call their preferred health providers to confirm they will be authorized to treat you next year,\u201d Moeller said. \u201cAlso, call health insurers to confirm details of any 2026 plans before enrolling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\"><strong>Fewer plans and doctors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Across all Medicare Advantage plans for individual enrollment, including those with and without prescription drug coverage, the average Medicare beneficiary has the option to choose among 39 plans in 2026, compared to 42 options in 2025, per\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/medicare-beneficiaries-have-32-medicare-advantage-prescription-drug-plans-available-on-average-for-2026\/#:~:text=KFF's%20analysis%20of%20plan%20offerings,Figure%201\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:KFF;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"21\" data-v9y=\"1\">KFF<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">But that slightly lower number of options belies the larger trend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">More than a million Medicare Advantage enrollees may lose their current plans next year because the <a class=\"link yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/medicare-advantage-plans-are-scaling-back-090008599.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:plans are being shuttered;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-rapid_p=\"22\" data-v9y=\"1\">plans are being shuttered<\/a>\u00a0due to higher medical costs and outpatient care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Expect this shrinkage to continue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">If you do nothing when you receive the notice, you\u2019ll be enrolled in a replacement plan, but there\u2019s no guarantee your favorite doctors will be on it. If the company is leaving the market altogether, you would have to sign up for a new Medicare Advantage plan if you want to stay in Medicare Advantage or switch to traditional Medicare for next year.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"higher-costs\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>Higher costs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">To cut their costs, Medicare insurers might be pushing yours up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Although many seniors focus on no-premium Medicare Advantage plans, the real priority should be total healthcare costs, Jae Oh, author of &#8220;Maximize Your Medicare,&#8221;<a class=\"link yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/how-medicare-advantage-works-and-what-to-consider-when-choosing-a-plan-192503650.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:told Yahoo Finance;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-rapid_p=\"23\" data-v9y=\"1\">\u00a0told Yahoo Finance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThe key factor, beyond premiums, is the annual out-of-pocket maximum \u2014 the point at which the insurer covers 100% of remaining costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201c$0-premium plans still exist, but the era of the truly &#8216;no-cost&#8217; plan is fading,\u201d he said. Some insurers are now adding health or drug deductibles, making it harder for beneficiaries to compare options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The average monthly plan premium across all MA plans, which includes MA plans that provide prescription drug coverage and MA Special Needs Plans (SNPs), is estimated by CMS to decrease from $16.40 in 2025 to $14.00 in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">That said, that\u2019s the average. Some Medicare Advantage companies are charging more than that and increasing the maximum out-of-pocket cost in many of their plans. This figure is supposed to represent the total amount you could pay toward your care over the year, in the form of co-payments and other charges. It is a vital number to watch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The government provides an upper limit, but insurers offer plans with a range of caps. In 2026, Medicare Advantage plans can\u2019t exceed $9,250 for in-network services or $14,750 for combined in- and out-of-network services.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"reduced-perks\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>Reduced perks<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">For 2026, experts say that some Medicare Advantage plans are shaving their dental and vision coverage, for example, and raising co-pays to see specialists. If you signed up for a gym membership through a Medicare Advantage plan, it may not be available next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cSupplemental benefits, such as dental, vision, and gym memberships, should be taken into consideration, but only after ensuring that the plan will provide affordable medical coverage and access to the doctors, hospitals, and medications that the person needs,\u201d Louise Norris, health policy analyst for\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.medicareresources.org__;!!Op6eflyXZCqGR5I!AJLlCMDTi5ZNG6ou67vKcNKHMCXZSSoqf_qfGirJ3CQoZ3-AOCyXnz8R1SDQnSPI5G6hCkjyutohos6dxDqNHvo$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:medicareresources.org;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"24\" data-v9y=\"1\">medicareresources.org<\/a>, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">She said it\u2019s critical to review the plan&#8217;s rules for things like prior authorization and step therapy, where a plan requires you to try a lower-cost prescription drug that treats a given condition before \u201cstepping up\u201d to a similar-acting but more expensive drug if the lower-cost medication has failed to treat the patient&#8217;s condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Sadly, one other change coming in 2026 is that many of those enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, who have chronic illnesses and limited incomes, may no longer be eligible for an array of extra benefits when a pilot project is cut off next year due to high costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The Medicare Advantage Value-Based Insurance Design Model, with 62 plan sponsors participating in 2025, provided benefits, such as less pricey prescription drug costs, food assistance, rides to medical appointments, and support to help manage chronic health conditions to over 7 million<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/medicare.chir.georgetown.edu\/what-to-know-about-cmss-announcement-that-it-plans-to-terminate-vbid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:beneficiaries;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"25\" data-v9y=\"1\">\u00a0beneficiaries<\/a>. It was aimed at low-income beneficiaries \u2014 those dually eligible for Medicare\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/medicare\/how-medicaid-helps-older-adults\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:and Medicaid;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"26\" data-v9y=\"1\">and Medicaid<\/a> and who qualify for Medicare\u2019s Extra Help program, which lowers prescription drug prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"mailto:%20kerry.hannon@yahooinc.com\" data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Have a question about retirement?
