{"id":10307,"date":"2025-04-01T07:25:44","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T11:25:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\/?p=10307"},"modified":"2025-04-01T07:25:44","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T11:25:44","slug":"with-labor-market-on-ice-job-hopping-has-taken-a-back-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\/?p=10307","title":{"rendered":"With labor market &#8216;on ice,&#8217; job-hopping has taken a back seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"cover-wrap yf-1rjrr1\">\n<div class=\"cover-headline yf-1rjrr1\">Job-hopping has lost its luster.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"body-wrap yf-40hgrf\">\n<div class=\"body yf-3qln1o\">\n<div class=\"atoms-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The median pay increase for workers switching jobs sank substantially to 4.8% last month from a pinnacle of 7.7% two years ago, according to\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlantafed.org\/chcs\/wage-growth-tracker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:recently released data;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"10\" data-v9y=\"1\">recently released data\u00a0<\/a>from the Atlanta Fed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">While job changers tend to receive higher pay increases than job stayers, the gap between job stayers and those who switch roles has fizzled and is now at its lowest level in a decade. A worker who stayed put and received an annual raise saw nearly the same bump in pay \u2014 4.6%, the Atlanta Fed found.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/with-labor-market-on-ice-job-hopping-has-lost-its-luster-130041911.html\">Read on Yahoo Finance<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThe pendulum is swinging back from the pandemic premium for new hires,\u201d Julia Pollak, chief economist at employment search site ZipRecruiter, told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThe gap between wage growth for job switchers and job stayers ballooned to the widest gap on record during the Great Resignation,\u201d she said. \u201cCompanies rushed to rehire after the pandemic, and the No. 1 focus was on hiring incentives \u2014 signing bonuses and raising starting pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-container yf-gf7d9g\" data-src=\"visualisation\/22239185\" data-testid=\"flourish-container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\/?attachment_id=10308\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10308\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"10308\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\/?attachment_id=10308\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kerryhannon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Screenshot-2025-04-01-at-7.14.55%E2%80%AFAM.png?fit=1212%2C1252&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"1212,1252\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Screenshot 2025-04-01 at 7.14.55\u202fAM\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kerryhannon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Screenshot-2025-04-01-at-7.14.55%E2%80%AFAM.png?fit=290%2C300&amp;ssl=1\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kerryhannon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Screenshot-2025-04-01-at-7.14.55%E2%80%AFAM.png?fit=640%2C661&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10308\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/kerryhannon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Screenshot-2025-04-01-at-7.14.55%E2%80%AFAM.png?resize=640%2C661&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"661\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The problem is that many companies felt burned by offering huge salaries and bonuses to people who stayed only a short while and then left for better opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Now the focus is on longer-term retention incentives such as retirement and health insurance benefits that make workers want to stay, Pollak said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Federal job cuts and\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.challengergray.com\/blog\/job-cuts-surge-on-doge-actions-retail-woes-highest-monthly-total-since-july-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:layoff;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"11\" data-v9y=\"1\">layoff<\/a>s by large companies are contributing to a chilly job market overall, flashing the warning signs that the golden era for job seekers has ground to a halt. A recent Harris\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-03-14\/can-i-find-a-better-job-american-workers-are-staying-put-in-frozen-labor-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Poll;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"12\" data-v9y=\"1\">Poll\u00a0<\/a>found that 7 in 10 Americans think it\u2019s difficult to find a better position than the one they have now \u2014 and three-quarters say employers hold the power in the market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cHiring is so weak and unemployment durations are growing,\u201d Pollak said. \u201cEmployers are opportunistically able to pick up great talents on the cheap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Talk about glum. A record-low 13% of job seekers described their search as going well, per the findings in a new ZipRecruiter\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.ziprecruiter-research.org\/job-seeker-confidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:report;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"13\" data-v9y=\"1\">report<\/a>. Gloomier still \u2014 more than 6 in 10 job seekers reported zero job offers, the highest level in three years.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_65310\"  width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  data-origwidth=\"640\" data-origheight=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B6P5HBdzgSA?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=0&rel=1&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=1&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/figure>\n<h1 class=\"yf-1090901\"><strong>A case for staying put<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">In 2022, wage growth contributed to people quitting their jobs for higher-paying options, Allison Shrivastava, an economist at the<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.hiringlab.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Indeed Hiring Lab;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"18\" data-v9y=\"1\">\u00a0Indeed Hiring Lab<\/a>, told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">&#8220;At that time, finding a new job was easy for most, and companies had to compete to hire workers. Now, that competition has greatly decreased,\u201d she said. \u201cThis shift \u2026 has made leaving their current job for a new one less attractive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The data backs that up. Workers are staying in their current jobs, as seen with the<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/jolts.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:low quits rate;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"19\" data-v9y=\"1\">\u00a0low quits rate<\/a>\u00a0tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics \u2014 2.1% or 3 million people quit in January.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"read-more-wrapper\" data-testid=\"read-more\">\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cThe labor market is on ice,\u201d Shrivastava said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Another more recent cause of that cooling is the result of mixed messages about where things are going.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cConfusion and uncertainty (are) causing workers and companies to hold onto jobs and workers, while at the same time holding off on expanding their labor force,\u201d she said. \u201cThis freezing can only last so long until the market gets frostbite, leading to an increase in layoffs or a further slowdown in hiring or quitting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">On a brighter note: It could also be that some people were able to find roles that were a better fit for them in 2022 when job switching was commonplace, and they are happy where they are, Shrivastava said. \u201cEither way, it&#8217;s clear that people are going to be staying in their current jobs for longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">One caveat that can impact those lower starting salary figures: When people change fields, they tend to take a pay cut initially. And plenty of folks have been doing just that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">During the pandemic many workers had time to do some soul-searching about what they really wanted to do, and the number of those transitioning to new careers has risen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cOnly about 30% of job seekers say they want to switch industries, but more than 50% of recently hired workers got their jobs in a new industry,\u201d Pollak told me.\u201cThat suggests that workers who keep an open mind, expand their search, invest in new skills, and follow opportunity are disproportionately successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"mailto:%20kerry.hannon@yahooinc.com\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Have a question about retirement?
