{"id":10180,"date":"2024-12-24T15:06:52","date_gmt":"2024-12-24T19:06:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\/?p=10180"},"modified":"2024-12-24T15:15:54","modified_gmt":"2024-12-24T19:15:54","slug":"return-to-office-mandates-spur-workplace-battle-of-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\/?p=10180","title":{"rendered":"Return to office mandates spur workplace battle of 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"byline yf-1k5w6kz\">\n<div class=\"byline-attr yf-1k5w6kz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"byline-share yf-1k5w6kz\">\n<div class=\"byline-comments-desktop yf-1k5w6kz\"><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Remote work is either on its way out or companies are vastly underestimating how attached their employees are to working in their slippers.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"body-wrap yf-i23rhs\">\n<div class=\"body yf-tsvcyu\">\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">A handful of recent workplace reports reveal the schism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">On one hand, there are the strident cries of corporate suits demanding workers return to the office at big companies like Amazon (<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/AMZN\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:AMZN;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"8\" data-v9y=\"1\">AMZN<\/a>) and Starbucks (<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/SBUX\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:SBUX;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"9\" data-v9y=\"1\">SBUX<\/a>), veiled with \u201cbrush off your r\u00e9sum\u00e9\u201d threats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">A recent\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/kpmg.com\/kpmg-us\/content\/dam\/kpmg\/pdf\/2024\/kpmg-2024-ceo-outlook.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:survey;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"10\" data-v9y=\"1\">survey\u00a0<\/a>by KPMG reported that roughly 8 in 10 CEOs envision a full return to the office in the next three years vs. 34% who had this prediction earlier this year. And 86% of CEOs \u201cwill reward employees who make an effort to come into the office with favorable assignments, raises, or promotions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">On the other hand, flexible work arrangements are crucial to more than 8 in 10 workers, and more than half say they would be willing to turn down a salary increase for more autonomy over when and where they do their job, according to a recent Charles Schwab\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/content.schwab.com\/web\/retail\/public\/about-schwab\/schwab_2024_401k_participant_survey_workplace_focus_findings.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:study;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"11\" data-v9y=\"1\">study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/tension-over-return-to-office-mandates-portends-coming-battle-in-2025-143055218.html\">Read on Yahoo Finance<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cThe evolution of work continues to be defined by flexibility and adaptability,\u201d Ruth Thomas, pay equity strategist at Payscale, told Yahoo Finance. \u201cWhile return-to-office mandates are gaining traction in some sectors, the enduring appeal of remote work is undeniable.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"starting-at-the-top\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>Starting at the top<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Last week, Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, whom President-elect Donald Trump named to head the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), joined the chorus and blasted forth about their plan to force federal employees to return to the office in hopes that some will opt to quit instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cRequiring federal employees to come to the office five days a week would result in a wave of voluntary terminations that we welcome: If federal employees don\u2019t want to show up, American taxpayers shouldn\u2019t pay them for the Covid-era privilege of staying home,\u201d the two wrote in a\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/musk-and-ramaswamy-the-doge-plan-to-reform-government-supreme-court-guidance-end-executive-power-grab-fa51c020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Wall Street Journal op-ed;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"13\" data-v9y=\"1\">Wall Street Journal op-ed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">How much time federal staffers spend working remotely varies by department, according to an August\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/OMB-Report-to-Congress-on-Telework-and-Real-Property.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:report;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"14\" data-v9y=\"1\">report<\/a>\u00a0from the Office of Management and Budget. The reality, though, is only a fraction of employees work fully remotely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Roughly 2.3 million civilians work for the federal government, according to the OMB report, which looked at 24 agencies that employ about 98% of the federal civilian workforce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Just over half, or 1.2 million, work fully in person since their jobs require them to be physically present. The remaining 1.1 million staffers are eligible to telework. About 228,000 employees, or 10% of the total, are in fully remote positions and are not expected to work in person on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"read-more-wrapper\" data-testid=\"read-more\">\n<h2 id=\"pack-up-and-leave\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>Pack up and leave<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">One consequence of requiring workers to show up in the office is that the voluntary turnover rate for traditional in-person work is 30%, around double that of remote companies and hybrid work environments, according to Payscale\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.payscale.com\/research-and-insights\/cbpr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:data;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"16\" data-v9y=\"1\">data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cOrganizations are finding that a balanced, hybrid approach often fosters both productivity and employee satisfaction,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cAs we close out 2024, the key to success lies in empowering teams with choice<em>\u00a0<\/em>and building cultures that prioritize results over presence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">That doesn\u2019t make Amazon\u2019s CEO Andy Jassy flinch. Last month, in\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/company-news\/ceo-andy-jassy-latest-update-on-amazon-return-to-office-manager-team-ratio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:a memo;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"17\" data-v9y=\"1\">a memo\u00a0<\/a>to office workers, he announced a full return-to-office starting in 2025, an increase from three days for the past year or so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cWe\u2019ve observed that it\u2019s easier for our teammates to learn, model, practice, and strengthen our culture; collaborating, brainstorming, and inventing are simpler and more effective; teaching and learning from one another are more seamless; and, teams tend to be better connected to one another,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIf anything, the last 15 months we\u2019ve been back in the office at least three days a week has strengthened our conviction about the benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Starbucks is also turning the screws, threatening its employees with job termination if they fail to follow the company\u2019s return-to-office mandate, according to a\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-10-28\/starbucks-threatens-to-fire-staff-who-don-t-come-back-to-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:recent memo;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"18\">recent memo<\/a>\u00a0obtained by Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-block-embed-youtube is-type-video is-provider-youtube epyt-figure\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  id=\"_ytid_91515\"  width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  data-origwidth=\"640\" data-origheight=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MyqRSPUElu0?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=0&rel=1&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=1&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"YouTube player\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"no-raise-no-problem\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>No raise, no problem<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Despite the pressure, plenty of workers aren\u2019t backing down. More than four years since the pandemic sent us home to work, flexible work arrangements remain a high priority for the vast majority of workers, according to the Schwab study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">In fact, it means so much to them that they\u2019re cool with getting paid less to do so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">In the last year, the percentage of baby boomers who are willing to give up a salary increase for a more flexible work arrangement jumped from 29% to 38%, according to the Schwab data. Gen Xers followed suit, rising from 49% to 54%; millennials, 67% to 71%; and Gen Z stayed essentially flat at 76%. Women are more likely to say that the ability to work from home and flexibility in work hours and location are must-have benefits compared to the men surveyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u201cSo many workers told us that they would be willing to forego a raise in their salary for more flexible work arrangements,\u201d Marci Stewart, director of client experience at Schwab Workplace Financial Services, told Yahoo Finance. \u201cIt\u2019s all a little surprising.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-workplace-battle-of-2025\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>&#8216;The workplace battle of 2025&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">So where does this disconnect leave us?<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cThis is absolutely going to be the workplace battle of 2025,\u201d John Mullinix, head of growth marketing at Ladders, the career site for jobs that pay $100,000 or more, told Yahoo Finance. \u201cDespite employer pushbacks, remote job availability has stabilized, and the debate over in-office versus remote work will likely intensify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">One factor in favor of those workers digging in their heels is evidence that the number of lucrative remote jobs is on the rise. High-paying remote job opportunities increased more than 10% last quarter, according to the latest research from\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theladders.com\/career-advice\/ladders-q3-high-paying-jobs-report-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ladders;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"19\">Ladders<\/a>, which pulled data from over half a million job postings on its site from July through September of 2024. High-paying hybrid job availability increased by more than 50%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cWhile some companies are strongly advocating for a return to the office, remote work remains significant in high-paying roles,\u201d Mullinix said. \u201cOf course, we\u2019re not anywhere near the soaring numbers we saw in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, but the latest data proved the RTO fight isn\u2019t over yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"mailto:%20kerry.hannon@yahooinc.com\" data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Have a question about retirement? Midsize employers who realize that remote options are key to attracting and retaining top-tier talent and staying competitive, Mullinix said. \u201cLarger employers will be more likely to continue their RTO push.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Certain industries are more apt to embrace and value remote work too, per Mullinix. Roles in software development, data analysis, and IT support, for example, are predominantly remote-friendly, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Many financial positions, such as those in analysis, consulting, and accounting, are adopting remote work models.
