{"id":10164,"date":"2024-11-21T07:16:56","date_gmt":"2024-11-21T11:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\/?p=10164"},"modified":"2024-11-21T07:16:56","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T11:16:56","slug":"heres-the-flipside-of-lifetime-achievement-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kerryhannon.com\/?p=10164","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s the &#8216;flipside of lifetime achievement&#8217; award"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"byline yf-1k5w6kz\">\n<div class=\"byline-attr yf-1k5w6kz\">\n<div class=\"byline-attr-logo yf-1k5w6kz\">Older adults as change makers: That has a sweet ring to it.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"body-wrap yf-i23rhs\">\n<div class=\"body yf-5ef8bf\">\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">The\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/about-aarp\/purpose-prize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:AARP Purpose Prize award;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"8\" data-v9y=\"1\">AARP Purpose Prize award<\/a>, which honors people 50 and older who are using their experience and skills to create a better world, was recently presented to seven nonprofit founders and came with a $50,000 prize in recognition and support of their work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">One of this year\u2019s winners, Jennifer Jacobs, 53, a nuclear engineer and former nuclear operations officer for the US Army Reserve, started her pivot 13 years ago when she read an article about foster care and the difficulty of finding a child\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Her years of work focused on nuclear nonproliferation crisscrossed with the intelligence community whose analysts often track and find terrorist networks. As unlikely as it sounds, that experience drew the connection for Jacobs between how similar technology could help foster care professionals find those children\u2019s families.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/aarp-honors-trailblazers-with-flipside-of-lifetime-achievement-award-172003647.html\">Read on Yahoo Finance<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">It didn\u2019t happen quickly, but in 2011, she co-founded\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/connectourkids.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Connect Our Kids;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"9\" data-v9y=\"1\">Connect Our Kids<\/a>, a technology nonprofit based in Falls Church, Va., that helps social workers, lawyers, and volunteers to do just that and provide support to both children and their families. (Photo by Jared Soares)\u00a0<span class=\"caption-separator yf-8xybrv\" data-svelte-h=\"svelte-nxhdlu\">\u00b7<\/span>\u00a0Jared Soares<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"practical-solutions-to-societal-problems\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>Practical solutions to societal problems<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">When the Purpose Prize was launched in 2005, its unofficial tagline was \u201cthe flipside of lifetime achievement award.\u201d The idea instead was to invest in what someone over 50 would do next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cWhat distinguishes so many of the Purpose Prize winners is not only entrepreneurial intuition, but they\u2019re also practical problem-solvers, rather than wild-eyed dreamers,\u201d said Marc Freedman, co-CEO and founder of social impact organization<a href=\"https:\/\/cogenerate.org\/\"> CoGenerate,<\/a> the group that created the Prize. \u201cThey represent a sense of the possibilities of this stage of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">The Prize, now under the auspices of AARP, showcases how older trailblazers are having a positive influence \u2014 working in fields such as healthcare, voter education, foster care, and financial empowerment for those who have been incarcerated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">As Jacobs realized, the transition often revolves around redeploying existing experience and skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">That was true for Jim Ansara, another prize recipient. After Ansara retired and sold his company Shawmut Design and Construction to his employees, he began to look around for what to do next. As he was struggling to figure out the answer, a charitable donation to the global nonprofit\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.pih.org\/country\/haiti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Partners In Health;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"10\" data-v9y=\"1\">Partners In Health<\/a>\u00a0led to a trip to Haiti.<\/p>\n<div class=\"read-more-wrapper\" data-testid=\"read-more\">\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">It was eye-opening. The depth of the poverty stunned him. He quickly saw that he could redeploy his professional background to take action beyond a philanthropic gift of cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Ansara, 66, began by volunteering to help construct a small hospital in Haiti. But before that could get rolling, an earthquake struck. He flew to Haiti from his home outside of Boston to see where he could be of service. He learned that the country&#8217;s primary hospital, General Hospital in Port -au -Prince was completely destroyed. Then, rather than building a tiny community facility, he found himself leading the construction of a 20 5,000-square-foot, 3 00-bed national teaching hospital in the town of Mirebalais.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">That\u2019s where the concept came to life for\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/buildhealthinternational.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Build Health International;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"12\" data-v9y=\"1\">Build Health International<\/a>\u00a0(BHI), the nonprofit he co-founded to construct healthcare facilities in impoverished areas. Driving the trend: baby boomers retiring and looking for pivots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">The programs, commonly based at large universities, generally have about two dozen students and involve anywhere from four months to one year of on-campus and hybrid sessions. wellness and what\u2019s next<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">In November, I\u2019ll be co-leading a weeklong MEA workshop to help older adults reimagine their career in midlife and beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">We\u2019ll deep dive on things we\u2019ve spent our entire careers exploring \u2014 how to discover (and rediscover) a sense of purpose, how to use our skills and life experience to make a difference, how to shift easily as the world around us changes, how to work alongside younger leaders, and how to finance these longer lives we hope to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">My co-leader is Marci Alboher, vice president of CoGenerate and author of \u201cThe Encore Career Handbook.\u201d The two of us aren\u2019t necessarily trying to change the world
