Here&#8217;s what you need to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"byline yf-1k5w6kz\">\n<div class=\"byline-attr yf-1k5w6kz\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"body-wrap yf-i23rhs\">\n<div class=\"body yf-5ef8bf\">\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Ready, set, go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">The 2025 annual Medicare enrollment period runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. During this time, those who are enrolled can make changes to their coverage, which goes into effect on Jan. 1.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">It\u2019s a big deal this year because some significant changes will kick in starting in 2025. Last month, you received your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) letter laying out upcoming shifts in Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage and costs that will be effective in January. If you\u2019re enrolled in Medicare Advantage, your letter spelled out the upcoming changes to your plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">My educated guess is that you set it aside, or even tossed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Find it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cIt\u2019s particularly important to review your plan this year because of the changes that we&#8217;re seeing both in terms of plan availability and premiums,\u201d Juliette Cubanski, deputy director of the program on Medicare policy at KFF, told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/medicare-open-enrollment-is-happening-now-heres-what-to-know-100046833.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cueWFob28uY29tL2F1dGhvci9rZXJyeS1oYW5ub24v&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAKogLM0iybBUI4jRzLuQDBRmUqIG3taKe_flpd1Zh2KaTEEKtxz2wZu1YNDNNp2cRJB7uM5n8q4W2Wsw1srRdwLXbxSoqkHzEkXe1jwv8lJowDVnONTUl2_R9fW8MDy-y4uT0PinpHjaEyKfJJFuHZpxpXHEtl5jBe6TDXfxS76n\">Read on Yahoo Finance<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cI know it can be difficult,\u201d Cubanski said. \u201cThere are a lot of plans out there, and especially if you take a lot of medications, doing that sort of comparison can seem pretty overwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">You may think that the plans are pretty much the same, so you\u2019ll stick with what you\u2019ve got. But push yourself to do this exercise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing some changes not just in terms of premiums, but in terms of cost-sharing, deductibles, and aspects of coverage that could affect both what people pay, but also their ability to access the medications that they need,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"whats-changing-in-medicare-drug-costs-and-coverage-in-2025\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>What\u2019s changing in Medicare drug costs and coverage in 2025<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"1-a-new-drug-cost-cap\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>1. A new drug cost cap.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">In 2025, everyone enrolled in Part D prescription drug plans will have their annual out-of-pocket drug costs capped at $2,000 for co-pays or coinsurance for the prescription drugs their plan covers \u2014 a provision in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. That\u2019s down from $3,500 this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">In 2025, Part D plans can have a\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/fact-sheets\/final-cy-2025-part-d-redesign-program-instructions-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:1;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:deductible;cpos:1;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"8\" data-v9y=\"1\">deductible<\/a>\u00a0of up to $590. Then you pay co-payments for your medications until your total out-of-pocket costs reach $2,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">AARP\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/pri\/topics\/health\/prescription-drugs\/medicare-part-d-out-of-pocket-spending-cap-prescription-drug-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:estimates;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"9\" data-v9y=\"1\">estimates\u00a0<\/a>that 3.2 million Medicare enrollees will reach the $2,000 cap in 2025. By 2029, this number will increase to 4.1 million, or about 10%, of enrollees. It will not apply to Part B prescriptions administered by doctors or any medications not covered by your Part D plan.<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">=<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">According to the analysis, people who reach the cap will save an average of $1,500 in 2025, and an average of 420,000 enrollees will save $3,000 or more between 2025 and 2029.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">That\u2019s fantastic in theory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cThis is going to lead to some really significant savings for people who&#8217;ve really been struggling with prescription drug prices,\u201d Leigh Purvis, AARP\u2019s prescription drug policy expert,\u00a0<a class=\"link yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/a-great-step-forward-nearly-9-million-americans-to-benefit-from-medicare-drug-price-cuts-205442433.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:previously;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-rapid_p=\"10\" data-v9y=\"1\">previously\u00a0<\/a>told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"read-more-wrapper\">\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">But this is business for those Plan D providers. In 2025, for example, plans will pay 60% of Part D drug costs in the catastrophic coverage phase, which starts when enrollees hit the $2,000 out-of-pocket cap. In 2024, the plans covered just 20% of those drug costs, according to KFF\u2019s<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/issue-brief\/what-to-know-about-medicare-part-d-premiums\/#:~:text=How%20is%20the%20Part%20D%20benefit%20changing%20for%202025?&amp;text=Once%20enrollees%20reach%20the%20out%2Dof%2Dpocket%20spending%20cap,a%2020%%20price%20discount%20on%20brand%2Dname%20drugs.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:analysis;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"12\" data-v9y=\"1\">\u00a0analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cIt&#8217;s hardly a situation that the drug companies are going to simply say, &#8216;Oh, we&#8217;ll just pay this money,&#8217;\u201d\u00a0<a class=\"link yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/author-qa-heres-how-to-navigate-the-complex-world-of-medicare-160042751.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Philip Moeller;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-rapid_p=\"13\" data-v9y=\"1\">Philip Moeller<\/a>, a Medicare and Social Security expert, told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">\u201cThey&#8217;re going to try wherever they can to change the rules. So everybody with a Part D plan has got to be on high alert. They have to look for higher premiums and higher out-of-pocket deductibles. They have to look for reduced coverage of their drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Your homework: Scrutinize your drug plan options and the lists of medications covered next year, plus your premiums and co-pays, and compare them to other plans in your area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">The Inflation Reduction Act included a\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/fact-sheets\/cms-releases-2024-projected-medicare-part-d-premium-and-bid-information#:~:text=Premium%20Stabilization:%20Beginning%20in%202024,for%20supplemental%20Part%20D%20coverage.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:6% cap;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"14\" data-v9y=\"1\">6% cap<\/a>\u00a0on base Part D premiums, but the cap does not apply to the total premium that individual plans may charge. The 2025 Part D base premium is $36.78, but actual premiums vary depending on your location and plan, according to the\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/fact-sheets\/cms-releases-2025-medicare-part-d-bid-information-and-announces-premium-stabilization-demonstration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"15\" data-v9y=\"1\">Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services\u00a0<\/a>(CMS).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-more-weight-loss-drugs-may-be-covered\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>2. More\u00a0<\/strong>weight-loss drugs<strong>\u00a0may be covered<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Medicare doesn\u2019t cover drugs prescribed explicitly for weight loss. But Part D plans can cover popular weight-loss drugs when your doctor says you need one for other reasons, such as Ozempic or Wegovy for type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Earlier this year, the FDA approved a new use for Wegovy, the blockbuster anti-obesity drug, to reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke in people with cardiovascular disease who are overweight or obese. For 2025, it\u2019s likely that Part D plans may add the drug to their approved lists.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-a-new-way-to-stretch-out-paying-for-your-prescriptions\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>3. A new way to stretch out paying for your prescriptions.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/inflation-reduction-act-and-medicare\/part-d-improvements\/medicare-prescription-payment-plan#:~:text=For%20the%20first%20time%2C%20beginning,at%20once%20at%20the%20pharmacy.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan;cpos:8;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"16\" data-v9y=\"1\">The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan<\/a>\u00a0will let enrollees pay their prescription costs monthly rather than shell out all at once.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">This allows you to spread out your out-of-pocket drug costs throughout the year. It doesn\u2019t lower your total cost but certainly can help with your monthly cash flow. To opt into the plan, contact your Part D provider to request a form to choose this option.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-medicare-advantage-plan-changes\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>4. Medicare Advantage plan changes.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">As enrollment in these plans, which are administered by private insurance companies, has exploded, costs for providers have ramped up. Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are increasing their deductibles somewhat over 2024 levels, Cubanski said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">It\u2019s a little bit more difficult for people to switch Medicare Advantage plans because that means potentially changing provider networks and doctors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">The reality is that Medicare Advantage insurers have been squeezed due to reimbursement changes from the federal government and rising usage by members. As a result, many experts I interviewed expect plans to become less attractive in 2025. Look for higher out-of-pocket prescription co-pay costs in some plans and reductions or even the elimination of certain benefits.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wrapper yf-eondll\" data-testid=\"inarticle-ad\">\n<div id=\"sda-INARTICLE-d5b4c57b-3bcd-4450-b5d2-0a785a826966-4\" class=\"sdaContainer dv-all sda-INARTICLE-d5b4c57b-3bcd-4450-b5d2-0a785a826966-4 yf-ee3idm overflow margin visible placeholder\" data-testid=\"ad-container\" data-ad-unit=\"\/22888152279\/us\/yfin\/ros\/dt\/us_yfin_ros_dt_mid_center\" data-ad-size=\"970x250,728x90\" data-ad-region=\"main-dynamic\" data-ad-loc=\"mid_center_4\" data-google-query-id=\"CIHXm-Pf1okDFQc5RAgdefYPiw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/22888152279\/us\/yfin\/ros\/dt\/us_yfin_ros_dt_mid_center_14__container__\"><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">In 2024, 32.8 million people were enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, accounting for more than half, or 54%, of the eligible Medicare population, according to <\/span><a class=\"link \" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/issue-brief\/medicare-advantage-in-2024-enrollment-update-and-key-trends\/#:~:text=In%202024%2C%2032.8%20million%20people,receipts%2C%20such%20as%20premiums).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:KFF;cpos:9;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"17\">KFF<\/a><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">. It&#8217;s projected to grow to 60% over the next decade.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">The average Medicare beneficiary has access to<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/fact-sheets\/medicare-advantage-and-medicare-prescription-drug-programs-remain-stable-cms-implements-improvements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:roughly 34;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"18\" data-v9y=\"1\">\u00a0roughly 34\u00a0<\/a>Medicare Advantage plans in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">A big enticement of Medicare Advantage plans is that they typically include coverage for benefits not included in traditional Medicare, such as drug coverage, eyeglasses, dental coverage, and fitness classes. Plus, they often have very low or even no premiums.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\"><em>Read more:\u00a0<\/em><a class=\"link yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/personal-finance\/is-health-insurance-tax-deductible-213954133.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Is health insurance tax deductible? Here\u2019s what you can claim.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">But for 2025, experts I spoke to say that some Medicare Advantage plans may reduce their dental and vision coverage and raise co-pays to see specialists. If you signed up for a gym membership through a Medicare Advantage plan, it may not be there in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">It could also get harder to find your preferred doctors and hospitals in Medicare Advantage plans for 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">And more than a dozen health systems have reportedly said they\u2019ll stop participating in certain Medicare Advantage plans from major insurers such as UnitedHealth, Humana, and Aetna next year.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-know-about-medigap-policies\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>What to know about Medigap policies<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">People contemplating moving from an MA plan to traditional Medicare should explore their Medigap options before they switch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Medigap policies are health insurance policies sold by private insurance companies that pay part or all of certain leftover costs after Medicare pays. They can cover outstanding deductibles, coinsurance, and co-payments and may also cover healthcare costs that Medicare does not cover at all like medical care received when traveling out of the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Some traditional Medicare enrollees receive supplemental gap insurance as a retirement benefit from their former employers, and low-income seniors get help from Medicaid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Many Medigap plans, however, reject applicants with preexisting conditions if they didn\u2019t sign up when becoming eligible for Medicare initially. People who have not had a private Medigap supplement plan for more than six months may be subject to coverage restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Medigap plans are not part of open enrollment.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"plans-can-change-substantially-from-year-to-year\" class=\"header-scroll yf-gn6wdt\"><strong>Plans can change &#8216;substantially<\/strong>&#8216;<strong>\u00a0from year to year<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">And there is some good news in that regard this year too. The\u00a0<a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/medicare-advantage-and-medicare-prescription-drug-programs-remain-stable-cms-implements-improvements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-i13n=\"cpos:12;pos:1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services;cpos:12;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-rapid_p=\"24\" data-v9y=\"1\">Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services\u00a0<\/a>(CMS) announced that the average total Part D premium is projected to decrease by $7.45 in 2025, from $53.95 in 2024 to $46.50 in 2025, and to $17 for Medicare Advantage plans, down by $1.23.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">Among Medicare Advantage enrollees, more than 4 in 10 did not review their current plan\u2019s coverage to check for potential changes in premiums or other out-of-pocket costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1pe5jgt\">And many did not review their plan for potential changes in the kinds of treatments, drugs, and services that would be covered in the following year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wrapper yf-eondll\" data-testid=\"inarticle-ad\">\n<div id=\"sda-INARTICLE-d5b4c57b-3bcd-4450-b5d2-0a785a826966-6\" class=\"sdaContainer dv-all sda-INARTICLE-d5b4c57b-3bcd-4450-b5d2-0a785a826966-6 yf-ee3idm overflow margin visible placeholder\" data-testid=\"ad-container\" data-ad-unit=\"\/22888152279\/us\/yfin\/ros\/dt\/us_yfin_ros_dt_mid_center\" data-ad-size=\"970x250,728x90\" data-ad-region=\"main-dynamic\" data-ad-loc=\"mid_center_6\" data-google-query-id=\"CKfVyOff1okDFefi_QUdKLgf8A\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/22888152279\/us\/yfin\/ros\/dt\/us_yfin_ros_dt_mid_center_16__container__\"><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u201cPeople are sort of frozen,\u201d Moeller said. \u201cThey struggled hard to make their initial Medicare decision. It was hard for them to do.
