I met her through my first big journalism job a couple decades ago, and she\u2019s always been a mentor to me because she\u2019s an engine of good ideas\u2014and she\u2019s generous with them. Last fall, she got to feeling pretty lousy in her job.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember162\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">She worked in media, and she had a fine gig. It paid enough, and the work was okay. But my friend had just reached this new moment in her life. Her youngest child had gone to college. Her partner had passed away a few years earlier. She found herself unencumbered. She had newfound time,\u00a0and she didn\u2019t want <em>just<\/em>a job. She didn\u2019t want to coast. She wanted to create things that mattered, to make connections, to make more money. She was professionally ambitious!<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember163\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">When she raised this with her boss, the response was disappointing: just chill out, he told her. Why do you want to work so hard now?<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember164\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">That&#8217;s a form of ageism \u2014an ism that is at the heart of today\u2019s episode.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/ageism-doesnt-have-hold-you-back-heres-what-do-jessi-hempel-zrije\/?trackingId=Y3PsBxpaSvmB5HNqudKrxQ%3D%3D\">Read on Linkedin<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember165\" class=\"ember-view reader-content-blocks__paragraph\">Ageism is tricky. The older we get, the more we encounter moments where we begin to wonder: how does the perception of our age impact us at work? Often it\u2019s not something we <em>can<\/em> know for sure, more of a suspicion that shadows us.
